I always wanted one back in the day - preferably a 914/6. This weekend there will be a gathering of Porsche 914's here in Townsend. Looks like they've closed registration with an attendance of 80 cars. Should be a sight to see!

Years ago I worked at a (New Order) Mennonite Camp - blew a few stereotypes I can assure you. I have fond memories of heading down the road in a co-counsellor's 914 at about 85 mph feeling like I was very very close to the road. Interestingly, my cousin just bought a 2002 Porsche Carrera type thing - and I was just thinking I would prefer a 914/6 or even a front engined - just to be different (does that surprise anyone ;)

Back when I was a airman stationed at Keelser (Biloxi Miss) I almost bought a used 914.

And on the other hand, rednecks trying to sell an old rotten VW bus on craigslist will always point out that it has the "Porsche engine". The type 4 engine used from 72 on
 
I'm a big fan.

It's funny (even to me) that I have never owned one; they have great appeal to me. But so do many other cars I guess.

I especially like the more basic, early 1.7 and 2.0 cars. Although it's always keen to recall that a very modest 914/6 took 6th overall at the 1970 24 Hours of LeMans. Considering the cars it beat, that's a stunning result.

Last week I was racing at New Jersey Motorsports Part in the NJ Historics at the Lightning circuit. We had several 914s there. Including my friend Gary's 2.0 car. Gary is a retired dentist in his 80s. (though he still does volunteer dental work in Central America). Linda took this shot around the fast T5. Note right front wheel.

A couple of the guys in Sewickley campaigned 914's. Quick cars.
 
I've owned two. First one was a low mileage '75 1.8L purchased in '77 as my daily driver. One of the best and enjoyable cars I've owned. Back then the alternatives in sports cars were either sadly outdated or had tough driveability or no power issues - other than those Datsun 240/260 Z's that seemingly everyone had. The second was a close to perfect '73 2.0L purchased at Imports at Carlisle in '91. Wish I still had it.
On top of that, in 1990 I stupidly walked away on a black on black '70 914-6 because the asking price I thought was too high ($12,000).
Still look at the ebay 914's.
 
Couple weeks ago saw a dark green 914/6 at a local show, fresh off a restoration, talked to the owner who said he had it rebuilt to go, and it was scary quick. Really nice package, in dark green (can you say BRG for German cars?). I too had a chance to buy a 914 maybe ten years ago, don't remember the displacement, but wasn't a 6. Nice light metallic blue, very clean, asking $2500, although it wasn't really a great time for me to buy a car, I kicked myself the next day and long after, was definitely a nice car, much better than the one I looked at last year (4K asking price) that had a turnbuckle welded to the underframe, presumably to allow for adjustment and counteract the thing sagging in the middle from the tinworm.
