This one had a happier ending:
A judge handed life sentences to two men convicted of robbing a Saugus Bank and leading police in a chase and shootout. Michael Ginnetti, 40, of Winthrop and Gabriel Megna, 49, of East Boston, were convicted on several charges, including robbery, assault and battery, and weapons charges. Ginnetti was also convicted of using body armor during a felony, according to a statement released by the Essex County District Attorney’s office.
Ginnetti and Megna, along with the deceased William Ekasala, were accused of robbing the Saugus Cooperative Bank at gunpoint on March 23, 2012. Police spotted the getaway car and gave chase as the three men drove into Malden. They men reportedly tried to carjack a women who had an infant in her car, but were unable to drive her stickshift car. During the escape attempt, the suspects opened fire on the officers. Ekasala was shot and killed during the fray.

I did read an article once that stated insurance companies saw fewer theft claims for manual transmission cars. The reason given was the younger you are the less likely it is you ever learned to drive one.

One of our local club members was car-jacked at gun point a couple of years ago in his Triumph Spitfire. He made a run for it while the would-be-thief tried to find reverse. The guy was still messing with the shifter when the police arrived. That fellow has had to take a few years off from driving (and a lot of other stuff).

I had to learn stick on my own. I had a girlfriend with a Corolla, but I just didn't get it. I bought a 1985 Toyota LandCruiser with a 4-speed. My neighbor taught me how to drive stick, and this time his teaching technique was much better. When I took Baby Blue for a test drive, I hadn't driven a stick in close to 6 years. I was rusty, but I picked it back up pretty quickly.

The couple of times I have needed to unholster, I found the big bore looking at the bad guy is enough to let him know this ain't no NATO injure but not kill piece.

Any muzzle looks big if it's aimed at ya with a determined: "bad career move, BUBBA!" face behind it.
Matter of fact, once stopped a punk dead in his tracks by using that: "You're about to DIE!" look while going for the waist with right hand. I didn't HAVE the weapon at the time but HE knew the look and posture and beat feet the opposite direction immediately, mumbling some BS about not shooting him in the back. He had jumped out of the neighbor's bushes as Mitsy was getting into her car, thought she was alone as I was just out of his field of vision 'til he broke cover. I reacted to the circumstance as best I could.
