Anti-roll bar installation

As I'm replacing the rubber bushings on the anti-roll bar links, the question that arises is how much to tighten the locknuts. There's enough thread to really allow the busings to be squashed dreadfully. My thought is to snug down the nuts just sufficiently to pre-load the bushings, without causing more than just a bit of deformation. Sound about right?
 
I would say to compress to about 3/4 of their original thickness. Without "some" compression, they won't be very effective. Too much & the life is short.

Black urethane bushes are readily available; look like rubber and are immediately effective from a non-compressibility standpoint.
 
cutlass, i did mine about a year ago as described by dave russell, compress to roughly 3/4 of original thikness and its working out just fine, interesting aside those bushing part number #021-769 are the same ones used on the "panhard bar", and as randy forbes mentioned the guys that are using the "urethane" replacements say thell never go back to the rubber ones and dont care what the concours judges have to say about it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Yes Randi, the urethane bushes are great. However, it is imperitive that the hardess of the material not exceed a shore value of about 50 or you will bend the top link attachment plate.----Keoke
 
That's important about the link attachment plate. I had to replace one, due to prior damage, with a new Moss part. The new part is substantially less thick than the original. Why? It can't be that much harder to make it right.

Interesting, even when I was actively autocrossing (with urethane swaybar bushes) I never bent one of those brackets. If I had just been lucky, I would've won more often!
