TR6 Another TR6 Header question

I've still got the problem of the studs coming out that connect my header to my downpipe. I've taken the air cleaner box off and tried to get the studs to come out. There seems to be no good way on getting on the bolts on the bottom to be able to get any force on the bolts. Would it be easier to remove the manifold and possible remove the whole exhuast system as a whole to get better access to these studs? The weather is nice and my car is down. Doesn't help my dad has his bugeye sitting right next to my car with the top down and ready to go at the turn of the key. Let me know LBC owners. Thanks

I had this problem when I was changing my manifold and exhaust this summer. It was on jackstands so I could get underneath. I ended up using a combination of extension bars, a six point socket and a 3' breaker bar from underneath to get it off - oh and a bunch of 4 letter words that I won't repeat. That was after using plenty of lube and letting it sit for an hour or so.

Don't know if you tried this yet, but if not then the manifold is a fairly strightforward job to remove. The two nuts in the middle were the worse pita for me to get to. You end up having to take off your carbs and intake manifold for access.

Eric,
KD Tools makes a slick little gadget for removing frozen studs. It is a round device shaped like a small donut that gets an ever-tightening grip on the shaft of the stud. You use a 3/8" drive to engage it. You can put enough force on the stud to twist it off. 99 times out of a 100, the stud will give before you break it. That 100th time be prepared to drill and tap. The tool is usually available at NAPA. I
removed some frozen head studs with it without hesitation.

Bill,

Is this the tool? This is a Craftsman version

Right-on. KD is cheaper though.

Works like a charm. An old muffler shop dude showed me his battered version, had to have one. Use it enough to justify the few bucks it costs.

Well the project is finished. I thought the whole stud had to come out but I guess not. Well I changed the nuts and lock washers and the gasket. Everything is fixed and I'm a happy camper. Happy motoring.
