I've only done it a few times, but don't recall it being terribly difficult.
One tip is to cut the hose that links the tank to the filler off shorter, so that it will fit entirely onto the tank neck while you install the tank (along with two clamps). Then once the tank and filler neck are in place, slide the hose up onto the filler neck and secure with the clamps.
Of course, it's also important to be sure you have the correct tank. I don't recall the details offhand, but there were at least 3 different tanks, and they don't interchange easily. The latest tanks are obvious because the outlet moved; but I don't recall what was obviously different about the TR2 tank (except it held more fuel). The straps changed, too.
The filler necks also changed, but I believe they are interchangeable.
