TR2/3/3A Another Steering Box Question TR3

I am re-gasketing the front steering box cover and as per Randall's suggesting I am reviewing the cover and the box real carefully. I have already found some nicks and bumps that needed to be smoothed out. My question though is that there is a total of 8 shims under the cover, is that a bit much, or not unusual? Is that not a bit unusual for it to come from the factory with that many shims in it? Just curious. All of the shims have some rust on them I can take care of that.
One other question, How do you check the end float on the steering column?

8 doesn't seem out of line to me.

But I would definitely suggest checking the clearance and adjusting the shim pack; don't just put it back like you found it. Especially if your old shims are rusty.

The Macy's garage write up doesn't show much about setting the end float, but you'll find it's been talked about before on this forum. I haven't done mine yet, but I'll probably follow some of this.

Ok, after rereading everything this morning after a reasonable nights sleep I get the feeling I should have worried about end float BEFORE hooking all the steering links up. Correct? Or can I still check it now? I know that I set the worm and peg to the correct central position, but cannot remember checking the end float. Durn I hate do-overs. But if it has to be done, I'd rather do it now before all the metal is on the front of the car.
