Could there possibly be a connection between the erratic
behavour of my gas gauge needle and the rough running of the engine? Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe I'm just reaching, but it seems that every time my car starts running rough the gas needle is also going wild. Any ideas.
Thanks

Well, a poor connection in the ignition circuit, or contact in the switch itself could certainly cause both symptoms.

One way to check might be to temporarily wire a test light into the circuit where you can see it while driving. If the light starts to flicker when the other symptoms appear, you've got your smoking gun.

OTOH, it might just be that vibration from the rough running is disrupting the gauge's operation (like maybe a poor ground).
