Another "rare" car for sale

I was browsing craigslist.org -- a daily ritual for me. I found an ad for:

"RARE 1964 Chevy Chevelle Four Door"

Okay, c'mon now! There were over 294,600 Chevelles made in 1964. The majority were sedans.

I actually sent an email and asked just what made his car rare. I don't expect to hear anything back, and even if I do, I suppose he'll say something dumb like "these are hard to find" or "you just don't see many of these around anymore."

I guess it's rare compared to, say, a '64 Impala or '65 Mustang...but you'd be hard pressed to find many less rare cars than a '64 Chevelle sedan!!!!

Here's his reply:

"BUT HOW MANY 4 DOORS DO YOU STILL SEE AROUND? THE COMMON COLLECTION HAS LEANED TO THE 2 DOORS , LETTING THE FOURS SLIP INTO NON-EXISTANCE. EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE THE MOST Made orginally"

grrrrrrrr......

I love people who can't make the distinction between rare=how many you see on the street today (not a measure of rarity) vs rare=how many were actually built (the real measure of rarity).

A few years back I would say so what, no one will buy that car for the insane amount he's asking so there won't be any harm done. These days I'd take that back, there are far to many people out there clamoring to get their hands on something from the classic years since car collecting is "in", and their checkbooks are coming out faster than their common sense can react, if they have any.

Rarity because few were built typically means a car was either high-priced or custom, or that it is a real antique. Rarity because not many are left usually means that noone wanted them once they wore out and noone wants them now.

I have said this many times before but eBay and "Rare" seem to go together along with "I am listing this for someone else" and "his father died so he is selling this rare car".

Cut the guy some slack, it is rare compared with a VW Beetle. It is all relative. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Or he could just admit "Rare means I want more money for this car than it could concievably be worth."

"Rare"=Yugo

I suppose if one wants to start with relativity of rareness than the car is not only rare it is the only one in the world. We all have a car that is the only one that is the car that it is. There are others like it but it is the only one exactly as it is.

And how many beetles have you seen on Ebay listed as "rare"
There's been plenty, trust me.
I've seen mid 90s Honda Civics listed as "rare 5 speed 3 door model" Oh, COME ON!
I agree with your "wants more money statement"
I believe it's called "fishing for suckers"

Wow! On the way to work this morning, I spotted a '64 Chevelle four door sitting out for sale in front of someones house. What a rare piece of automotive history!

When my '99 Corvette was totalled in the flood in Houston, I sent the insurance company information showing that it was "one of three" Corvettes. I used the production information to show that based on percentages, it was one of three '99 Convertibles with a 6spd, Z51, Sebring Silver paint/black interior/black top and no extra weight-adding options. I got an extra couple grand for it than they were originally offering.

Sam,

Do they normally come with the 'weight adding' option. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Rare is the way I like my steak. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gifRandi

A little off topic - I read through eBay ads for model airplane kits constantly. There are quite a lot of genuinely rare, antique, or just hard to find popular kits on there. BUT - I constantly see a 10 year old kit advertised as a "very hard to find, rare kit" when the darned things are still being sold brand-new. What amazes me even more is the number of people who buy the kits at auction for just a couple of dollars less than they can buy an identical brand-new for. Go figure.

Actually, yes, they did! The power seats, adjustable suspension, body side mouldings were all heavier options that year, and did nothing to help the car's ability to accelerate, brake and corner. The adjustable suspension is a real pig, plus it's very expensive to fix. The Z51 was extremely rare on convertibles at that time.

Perhaps by "rare" he means "not well done." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

you sir are an adroit punster! I liked it alot! Today I needed the laugh!Randi
