Just to keep everyones intrest up.

Yep the glass has O rings between it and the gage the chrome rim had something between it and the glass as well. Looked like tar with a fiber in it, what do you supose it was. and what should be used there?

Not really sure why it was in there. Dosn't seem to be a reason or need for it?

Seems it is already a preaty tight fit with the o ring under the glass.
 
I have had the occasional loose glass in a guage and it will produce an annoying buzz/rattle. If the o-ring doesn't make it tigh, the dum-dum will fix the problem

Yep, think I will try to locate some just for effect. Maybe Autozone or my friendly auto body shop. Not much required at all.
 
Or you might already have some shoe-goo in a drawer, that's what I used on my gauges, worked a charm.

Ohhhh, sounds like glue to me. Don't think that would be a great idea.

I have a steel knee so no running here.
 
Tar, Flashing cement, new roof in a tube, like in a caulk tube for ease of squirting it around the gauge. Do NOT use silicon caulk if you ever want to get the glass off in the future.
