Stopped by the local auto wrecker (the only one here),
& was informed that they aren't allowing anyone to go into it,
without an employee escort.
I always enjoyed wandering around there,& save a lot
of parts (& a couple of cars) that would have been crushed/recycled.
I was told that their liability insurance went from $40K to $100K.

That is truly sad. It seems like every year there are things I enjoyed as a kid that are taken away from us due to the ever increasingly litigious nature of this country.

I feel your disappointment. I spent many hours in my younger years just wandering around salvage yards. Sometimes I even bought something.

The local yards were one of my youthful hangouts, too. Always on the lookout for some wrecked, stolen or burnt out muscle car we could buy and fix up for short money. Closest I ever got was buying a stripped '67 Shelby GT350 Mustang for $500 that I really wanted. Turned out the guys that owned it stripped it out themselves, reported it stolen, bought it back from the yard after getting the insurance and put all the parts back.

We had one with foreign cars. Street signs to show where each make and model would reside, all chassis were on concrete block for ease of access. Long gone.
