another newbie question- carbon canister

I'm tiding up the engine bay and was wondering:

what would be affected by the removal of the carbon canister?
I don't have the smog eq. and in this area won't be emission inspected so why keep it?

I have removed all of the "smog" stuff but left the cannister and connections...anti-run-on valve, carb vent and drain. I don't think that the cannister detracts from the appearance of the engine compartment, and in light of the damage that can be done with gasoline over flows and vapors in an engine comparement, feel that I would rather have it there. Just MHO

I left mine in, but the carbon has long since gone and it is essentially just a "vent" now. I've had no problems with it set up that way, just FYI.

I pulled the canister out tonight because I was curious to know what was inside.. two clogged filters and about a pound of what appears to be rat pellets (when the carbon scattered all over the floor). I'm going to put it back, but I was told to use self-activating charcol (like the stuff used in fish tanks) and could replace the filter material with green scotch-brite pads.

The carbon canister can easily be renewed by simply stopping by your local pet store & buying some aquarium filter charcoal. You can use a "pancake" filter from an old GM car or similar to replace the fiberglass pad filter. All done for under 10 bucks & you insure no fuel smell under the bonnet. It's amazing how this canister gets so pasty & clogged.
