Another nail in the coffin for BL

Your government is only looking out for your well being, JP. Those 3,000 RHD cars are EEE-VILE! They could go all "Christine" on public roads at any moment.

Morelike the legislators needed to be seen as doing ~something~ for the position they're in. Killing RHD cars could be "spun" as a safety issue, the ownership is so small they won't be able to make a loud enuff noise against the stupidity. Lawmakers win: Public is safe from the menace of cars built to drive on the wrong side of the road, thus avoiding head-on collisions.

"been no fatalities".......... let's be safe anyway.
Government in action........ next step, helmets in cars.

BL makes LHD cars...keep us appraised if any interesting RHD cars show up for sale up there.

"Bergeron acknowledged there have been no fatalities as a result of the right-hand-drive aspect of a vehicle"

Perhaps they should ban left hand drive vehicles...certainly fatalities in those....

(of course they should make Montreal a 'vehicle free city' and save thousands of lives....)

I've talked to people here in Alberta in recent years and the same topic has come up...

I think the issue has largely come up because young people can purchase high-performance Japanese cars for dirt cheap, and that inexperienced drivers like to street race with these RHD Japanese cars, and/or simply drive aggressive when not street racing, and have supposedly racked up a lot of car accidents as a result.

Yet people I've talked to think that it would probably be illegal to even enforce and put into law, and would be subject to court challenges. It certainly would be a shame if a law like this would prevent older British/Australian/etc... cars from being imported into Canada.

I talked once to the owner of a Bond Bug, right-hand-drive of course (yes Larry Read for those who know him), and he said that it wasn't that difficult driving it around, it just simply took some extra care during certain conditions, and of course in his case the car isn't exactly a daily driver...

British tourists in the thousands take their cars to continental Europe every year and drive quite safely for the most part on the wrong side of the road.

Problems arise not because of the car's physical layout, but almost always because the drivers forget where they are and on what side of the road they should be.

As always, it's a driver problem. not the car or its design.

I drove a London Cab around the Niagara area for a summer and other then 'passing' (which I wouldn't recommend), it was no different....

Ok, you guys are way too serious, all I'm concerned about is whether British Leyland can weather this latest round of pressure.

:jester:

The politicos in la Belle Provence have obviously found all the English signs that are bigger than the French ones and so they are now looking for other ways to keep their bureaucracy going.

I believe you're right, ay.

Mes Amis;

If they call it French-Leyland, we will leave it alone!

Dave

*SNORK*!!!

'k Dave... I'll PM ya wif th' addy t' send th' replacement keyboard.

Do you really think it's an English versus French thing?

NO - they are actually targeting Japanese Domestic market cars. In Canada you can import at 15 years old. So we are getting a slew of vehicles from Japan. They all have less than 100km on the engines and fall into one of three categories.

1. Micro Trucks & vans (Kei cars) - Suzuki Carry etc.
2. Diesel 4X4's - Toyota 4 runner etc.
3. Fast Cars - Nissan Skyline etc.

It's #3 that they are after especially because they are FAST and street racing is such a problem.

So, um, why not pass some law outlawing street racing, eh?
Oh, wait......they already have that, just don't agressively enforce it, eh?

My reading is not a ban on owning and driving, just a ban on importation.
Look at Oz....unless it was a Lend-lease vehicle, it MUST be RHD....no LHD's....(although in the North States you could for a while bring in LHD...)

What in the heck are they going to do aboot postal vehicles that are RHD for delivery, eh?

BAN MAIL DELIVERY!

I've owned a bunch of LHD American cars in England, and used several of them on a daily basis, often including a 27-mile commute. No problem, except for overtaking and some of the less-well-thought-out junctions. (And yes, I know American cars are bigger than the UK norm, but when you spend your working day with a 20+tonne truck, that's not an issue.)

All this is, is yet another petty attack on the simple freedoms we enjoy because our forefathers fought for them.
