Does anyone remember Thompson? Thompson Raceway was created in 1952 by George and Barbara Weaver in Thompson CT – it was the first purpose-built road course in the US. They ran it until the mid-1960's and were major figures in SCCA circles in the northeast during that time. George died many years ago while Barbara continued to be active in local affairs, especially with the historical society. She retained ownership of most of the land on which the track sat. I was saddened to hear that Barbara passed away last Sunday, 12/26. There's an old saying “When a old person dies, a library burns”. I think it applies here for sure.

I've never heard that before but it's very fitting. I suspect my demise would be likened to the tabloid section of a news stand.

I used to drive down from Boston (Northeastern Univ.) in my TR4 to catch the races there. Sometimes my father would drive up from Long Island in his Saab and meet me there. :driving:

Here's some info about the Thompson Road Course. This site has listings of all the past and present road courses...actually all types of race venues are on that site.

The Hoenigs owned land adjacent to the Weavers and I think the original oval portion of the early road course was on Hoenig's property. However, Thompson Speedway and Thompson Raceway were two separate organizations (and two eras, I think). Some current photos of the road course are here.
