Another Horror on Harold's Underside

[ QUOTE ]
Yeah, the angle drive is a "transition" bit. From what you've photo'd it's a scrap bit in any case (square end broken off in the pinion drive shaft). You'll need a new cable, angle drive and the bits wot go into the tranny. It's a "bite the bullet" scenario. The bits from the speedo head on down to the tranny pinion are FUBAR'd.

"ungood"... but ~so~.

Oh bugger!

And I just missed an angle drive that was going on Ebay :-(

I'm going to have to get the angle off the cable anyway, in order to extract the cable, I suppose.

You should have in the 90 degree adapter a square drive shaft that goes into the square opening in the pinion gear. If it is broken off and in the pinion, than the 90 degree adapter is damaged. Phil

Hi Phil, yes I think this is what happened. But I can't be sure, because I can't get the darned thing off: it's dangling under the car in the semi-darkness and wont respond to PBBlaster and gruntwork. I will prevail. In the meantime I bet I need to start searching for an angle drive.

The cable should come out of the firewall from the engine bay after disconnecting the speedo end. Draw it up into the engine bay from below after that. From your pix: suspect there may be a tie-wrap still securing it somewhere along its length. Then you can bench it or bin it. Cable ~may~ still be intact.

If you hold the body of the adapter with channellocks and hold the rond nut on the cable with another pair of channellocks and should be able to remvoe the adapter by rotating the nut on the cable counter clockwise as viewed along the cable with your head being nearer to the speedometer.

Why is it a pair of channellocks or pliers for that matter? Never thought about this before. Is a plier only one piece of the assembly? If it is, than I would have to ask for a pair of pliers with their attendant hardware!

Phil

Scissors too. That kinda stuff can get ya scratchin' yer head... Like linguistic oxymorons: How does "Jumbo Shrimp" make any sense? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Also... do you have a maintanence counter? Oh... and Tony... I meant to get on fromyou with the short cable when I picked up the Alfa 'bout 10 months ago. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kenny - I think I have a counter but not sure about the cable.

I remember now.. I really just wanted a counter to play with... and maybe make an aftermarket "reseter" for them.
