Another frustrated MG B owner - coming back at it

I belonged to the group some many moons ago; prior to a virus wiping my computer clean and the rebuilding process - just got it about ready to use and going back to the MG - sitting on stilts in the driveway and me looking very dumb. I think this time I'll try to determine exactly what I'm driving. VIN is GHN5UG3893990G; engine is 18V883AE-L4270; comission is G23N130004 - don't know what I'm driving - supposed to be a 76, but I recently had to change the starter solenoid and the 76 year model don't fit; just the 68-71 model
solenoid. Presently, after acquiring (2) new solenoids, when I connect it to the car, it shorts directly to ground - all leads off except the battery. I want to actually drive this someday - before taking the solenoid out, it would start up and drive for a while; when I stopped, it wouldn't start again - sounded like it was out of electrons - slow turnover. If I waited till the next day, it would start up..
hence, the solenoid "getting hot" theory and removal.
Any comments? I'm tired of taking it to $100.00 an hour experts who can't get it right either...so, going to go it alone, with your able assistance, of course, and if it don't work this year, it'll be a sale item.
Sorry about all the tears...I just want to DRIVE the darn thing...

Welcome back, Wayne!

Post your question over on the MG side, and I'm sure you'll get some input.

Thanks...just exactly where is the MG side? It's been a long while and I need a flashlight to grope my way through this site...just like working on that car...

Scroll down to where it says, "MG".

Welcome back, and good luck!! :savewave:

Well, first of all, welcome back!

Secondly, all the numbers on your car would indicate that it's a 1976 model. G says it's an MG, H is a car with an engine between 1400cc and 2000cc, N is a roadster. 5 shows that it was made between late 1969 to 1979... U is for a North American spec car. So far, so good. G is 1976 model year car. There are then six numbers followed by the last letter, which is a G for Abingdon.

The engine number 18V-883-AE-L is for a 1977 or later model car. Your car's engine should start with 18V-801-AE-L so it looks as though a later engine has been fitted to your car at some stage in its life.
