If you can believe it, I actually joined FaceBook yesterday, just to see how it works. Created a *very* sparce profile, and declined the "search your address book to add new friends" choice.

Well, this morning I got an email from FaceBook. "You have friends waiting to talk with you."

I went to my FaceBook page, logged in, and found 82 (!) people listed. And I actually know two of them!

I contacted (via email) one of the people I actually know, and she said she never knew I was on FaceBook, and didn't send me a friend request.

Where do all those "friend requests" come from? Obviously I'm not going to add any strangers as "friends", but in 24 hours how the heck did so many names get routed to my "potential friends" list?

Add this to the "look on page 56 of your nearest book and post what it says" thing - I'm not overly impressed with FB's security and usefulness, at least for me.

Are you using Facebook on https?

When I first joined FB I had a number of friend requests as there are some who just want the most "friends" and probably have a way to find who has just joined and makes friend requests. I often find when I post a photo on Flickr, that before I have even given it a caption or added it to a set, someone has viewed it. I have found old friends from my past via FB, and have used it as a tool to expand the mailing list for my HS class reunion that I ended up running when the class officers stopped wanting to be involved.

Actually, a "nom de net". No personally identifiable stuff at all. No pictures or links. Just my email address used to sign up - but not in my profile or page.

Amazing that someone I know - who didn't even know I was on Facebook - was directed by FB to "friend me".

Nope, email. Facebook will search your email address list and compare it to their accounts, offering to let you "friend" those you already have in your email records. The same is true of other's email records, so, while you might not let it go through your files, someone else has, seen your email and voila - a friend request.
 
hmmm - I can see the logic of the email connection. But I used my "second" email address for registering with FB, which I never use for sending personal mail. All incoming mail to that account is forwarded by that account to my personal account - which FB doesn't know about. And folks I know don't know about that "second" account.

And I did answer NO to the "search email for possible friends" question.

I still think there's more going on under the FaceBook aegis than we know. Maybe FB scans all the pages of all its members, for references that can be "linked"? But then, all my pages are blank!

All the "you might know" stuff comes from algorithms. Like google. They look for similarities in school, location, etc. Once you're past that, they recommend folks who are friends with your friends.
There are GLC's who want lots of friends.....and usually we figure it's some pimply-faced boy in Junior High.
I've got a list of folks I do not know and/or have no desire to be "friends" with, so I ignore those.
Use the secure part, the https, and save THAT in your bookmarks. NEVER open any FB ads, or apps, that show up on the right side of your screen, and never open any suspect "videos", even if on a friend's page.....there are a lot of viruses floating around on FB.
There is no freaking way them turkeys are going to have access to my e-mail, even for a minute, so do not do that. YOU can do the same thing selectively from your address book, should you so desire.
I use it for extended family and old HS classmates. 45+ years after I left The Valley, it is really fun stuff re-connecting and messaging back and forth.

Mostly fambly (for better or worse) and a few friends.
 
Mine is family, Church, and HS friends. Even found my cousin, who, when I messaged her, said I was mistaken, she has no living relatives. Oh, boy, she missed that by a WHOLE bunch. She got my Uncle's Genealogy charts yesterday, now she's a believer.
 
Go to Account and then Settings. You can privatize your page. I am on FB and it's a great way to communicate with a group of your friends rather than separate emails. IMHO

Yep - did that the same day I set up the FB account. All done within about 30 minutes. Everything is checked "Share with Friends Only".

But here's the kicker: there is NO info on my pages at all. No words, no photos, no links. Blank. Zero. Nada. Nichts. Rien du tout! I just set up the account to see what would happen. One BCF member wanted me to see his pictures on FB. But I couldn't see those pages unless I joined FB myself.

So unless info was shared (or harvested) by FB *while* I was doing the initial account setup ... there is no info to be shared even if I didn't have any privacy settings.

Amazing how many areas and sub-areas you have to dive into to set privacy and "who sees what". Major areas to check privacy settings are: "Connecting on Facebook", "Sharing on Facebook", "Apps and Websites", "Blocklists", and then ... "Controlling how you share".

A plethora of choice!

One interesting and separate FB privacy choice: "Let friends of people tagged in my photos and posts see them." (I checked NO.)

And this tidbit I found recently: "Faces in photos posted on Facebook will be automatically scanned and tagged, unless the users opt out." I don't know the status of this "feature" - maybe rescinded? - but I don't have any photos anyway.

It boggles the mind.

Again, I'm not saying that FB doesn't serve a purpose for many folks. But I wonder if people really understand how their info is "shared" - and by whom.
