Another eBay scam

Doesn't that just make you crazy - argh! Funny thing is that I think most of these are shut down due to active communities like this.

here is another typical scam eBay# 4605371179, "seller" registered yesterday, has zero feedback, has posted a picture of a car stolen from the Hyman Ltd Class Cars website here

Velox--

Sharp eyes--have you reported it to ebay yet?

Perhaps I am dense but motivates fraudulent sellers to run ads like these? Is anyone really dumb enough to send $13+K dollars without some proof that the car exists, that there is a title, etc? AS with the BN1 that was relisted, what am I missing?

FWIW I purchased a BN7 for my wife off of ebay sight-unseen several years back--see her article in this month's "Healey Marque" for some pictures of it (and her).

I had the car inspected by two different parties before I cut the final price so I knew that it actually existed and had a pretty good clue as to its condition. I also had the signed, notarized title in my hands before I sent the seller a 20% deposit and did not pay him the rest of the purchase price until he shipped me the car--the deal being that I would either accept it and pay him within three days or send it back at my expense. The car arrived in Maryland from Florida in an enclosed transporter, I drove it and paid him and have never regretted the purchase.

No doubt this was not the typical ebay deal and probably not many sellers were as motivated or trusting as was mine, but in any case everyone went away happy.

Hi Michael, yes I reported it - the "seller" is from "another eBay site and may not understand your language" as I also emailed the seller asking them if Hyman Ltd knew they had posted the photo of their 65? No answer! Man I hate scams /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif I spotted this right away as I have bought a Healey from Hyman and knew this car too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

I bought mine on Ebay too. I started to sweat when it didn't arrive on the date expected. I made a ton of unanswered calls. When they finally returned my calls they put me in touch with the delivery driver who kept telling me how beautiful the car was. It was delayed due to other cars being delivered to the same area on the same transport. That was why the shipping was so cheap. That was the longest 6 days I can remember. It was due in 3 days! Ebay can be good if you investigate everything and dont get carried away in the bidding war. Know the price its worth and the top you will pay and then it is good and fun. But as they say, let the buyer beware.

Go to: https://www.capitalhealeys.org/caahcnewsletter.html
and read the article in the July, 2005 issue for yet another interesting ebay/Healey experience, this by Ian Dunnington of the Capital Area chapter.

WOW that was fast, the auction has just been pulled, and a search for that auction number I posted gives zero results. I would hope that no one would ever bid big bucks for a car from a seller registered the day before with zero feedback, at least not without some very serious investigation. Anyway, this one had a good ending /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hey Velox, welcome to the forum! Good to see another Iowan on board, hope to see you on the road sometime. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Got my Healey on ebay too. It was a private auction. I emailed the seller and wire transferred the Buy it Now price to him. The seller was selling it for his deceased Grandfather. Seller informed me that the car was located in Germany but that he would ship the car promptly. It's been 6 months now, but I expect the car any day. For some reason the seller doesn't seem to be answering any of my emails regarding the expected delivery date.

Hey Wana, yeh I'm in Des Moines. I haven't posted a newbie intro message as even though I have my Healey title and tags the truck won't be here until Sat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Velox, I'm in Des Moines too. I know Saturday can't come soon enough for you! Check your private messages.

I also looked on ebay for the bogus sale and noticed that it was gone. I did see the nice looking 65 that happens to be the same colors as the one I am putting back together. The pictures were so good that I downloaded them all to use as reference. No wonder there are so many bogus attempts to sell nonexisting or someone else's car. The pictures can be downloaded and then slightly modified to protect the guilty and then used for fraud. I am attaching the picture of the nice looking 65, ( not a fraud as far as I know ).

Yes ED, that is a very nice car.I was at their shop today and looked it over. However, I do not know the source of this car. I may get more time later in the week to really go over it.---Keoke

Hi Keoke,
Did you drive a couple miles farther to Cars with Class? They have a red one also. Actually, so did the Morgan dealer on Pico, but that one is gone from their parking lot. I wonder if the three dealers trade the same cars back and forth? Hmmmmm.

Greg, I have a feeling that they do I can remember a Maroon SP250 that seemed to show up at the Morgan place on Pico and also at Checkered Flag. Have not been by Cars with Class for a while now, besides I have to change clothes if I go in there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif---Keoke

Are you saying that you have to dress down when you come to my ā€˜hood? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I got my BJ8 off ebay as well, sorta. The seller was local, so we made a deal off line. It worked out in my favor because the seller didn't know ebay well and he thought the car wasn't moving, but he didn't realize that people bid at the end, not the beginning, of an auction. Of course, the PO represented my car as fully restored, which shows how little he knew about the car.

Most of the scam listings are pretty easy to detect if you have any familiarity with ebay. On the other hand, you have to wonder about someone who will buy a car off ebay when they haven't taken the time to learn how it works. These are the people the scammers go for. Remember all those western union payment schemes? Kinda like the Nigerian bank scheme. It may not suck in many, but it must suck in enough people or they wouldn't keep trying.
