Another crane accident

This one is close to where I work. There is an old shipyard in Quincy, MA that what been closed since the mid 80's. The property changed hands several times since then and they talked about building ships there again but they have started to take down the cranes and fill in the dry docks. The last few weeks they were starting to take down the big gantry crane called Goliath and today one of the A frame legs fell and kill a worker. They have the crane supported by 4 columns and they have it lifted off the ground while they take it down from the bottom up. The leg that fell looks like it just missed one of the columns, which if it had been damaged would have made the whole shootin' match come down.

The property is in two different town and last year they were taking down the superstructure over one of the dry docks when two people were killed. One town let them use explosives to take down the structure and the other wouldn't give them the permits. They imploded one side and while the other was waiting to be dismantled it collapsed on a nearby building, killing two asbestos abatement workers.

I just got done managing a large construction project at work and I glad it's over. We had an electrician die from a preexisting medical condition but no lost time or recordable injuries from accidents. Everyone thinks the cranes are fun to watch but I'm glad when they're gone.

As a side note, the Kilroy cartoon character was started by a ship inspector whose last name was Kilroy. When he inspected a part of the ship he wrote Kilroy was here and drew his character. The troops going to Europe saw this and it spread from there.

I did a stint as an N.D.T. inspector at a steel mill. Kilroy apparently somehow wound up there too... Many of the rail cars leaving that place had his moniker on' em. :smirk:

Oh so *that's* what you've been up to.

Not too late to run NJMP in Sept (19-21) if that car's ready...or, if you don't have a finished car, come and flag. It should be a great event (see my message in the "Racing" section).

OSHA is coming down very hard on crane operators nowadays. If the owners are found negligent, it's jail time. Crane safety is a whole world of it's own in the safety biz, for good reason.

Very sad, workplace deaths. I hope the deceased worker had insurance for his family.
