another carb problem?

Well, we're been gone a while and the ole MG has been sitting in the carport. I got it out last week and it ran fine. Took a trip to Palm Springs and enjoyed the weather, even if the wind was strong.

When we got back to town, the engine stopped at a light -- two miles from home. We had to tow it because all we could get was a start, run for about 5 seconds and then the engine dies. Over and over.

Any bright ideas out there? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest a supply problem as the first thing to check. Pull the supply hose from the carb and put it into a vessel like a coffee can, have someone turn the ignition on (No cranking, just dash lights) and see if it is pushing fuel. Should supply some amount, not wimpy drips. The flow rate is in most good manuals. Check the rubber fuel lines before the pump for cracks too.

or the ignition relay... smack it with a screwdriver handle and clean the connectors on it.

coil going bad?

Wooden it be a good idea for him to read the 'quick carb fix' thread?

What carb do you have?

Back when my 76B still had a ZS carb it got to where it would do something like that; start, run well for awhile, then die at a light, start and die. Always happened at the most inconvenient times and places! Finally figured out that when it died if I loosened the cap on the carb damper just a little, car would start and run fine. I never really figured out what was really causing the problem because I installed HS4’s and the problems with the ZS went away!

What a coincidence! My ZS problems went away almost immediately after we installed HS4's too!!!

at janels's post... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

LarryP,

We're running a ZS with a water choke converted to a manual one.

Haven't had time to test the fuel flow or the spark, but I'll post when I get stumped or solve the problem.

I'm open to more ideas.

We were gonejust two weeks. I didn't think a stabilizer was necessary for that short a period.

I would think not, too...just a thought when you said you were gone a while. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
