The death of Linda Brown on Sunday reminded me of all the changes that we've seen since she was first prevented from attending her closest neighborhood elementary school at age 9. That was 1953.
"Brown vs. Board of Education" was decided by the US Supreme Court in 1954; her father, Oliver Brown, had tried to get his daughter Linda into the closest neighborhood school, but was told no.
Here she is at Sumner Elementary in Topeka, Kansas. Walking outside the fence, while the boys play inside the fence, tells a *lot*.
