Annual Spring Ritual - New Twist

Each year at this time (usually a week or two earlier) I take the TR250 out for it's spring check up and shake-down cruise. So this morning, a particularly glorious Sunday, I checked out all of her vital fluids and off we went for the typical 20-30 mile jaunt. This year I decided to add a new twist, a test of sorts.

I have long believed that all LBC's attract attention and sometimes that attention is annoying. I have experienced this many times. My normal shake-down in on a limited access divided highway, 2 lanes in each direction with a 55MPH speed limit. Everyone normally drives approx. 60-65MPH unless smokey the bear is out. But, no matter how fast I drive my TR250, everyone either passes me or tries to pass me. Just for the record, I have no noxious exhaust issues or junk falling off this car.

So, today I decided to test my theory.

1st run at speed limit - everything passed me including a bread truck.
2nd run 60mph - 90 percent of traffic passed or tried to pass.
3rd run 70mph - 50 percent of traffic passed or tried to pass.
4th run 80mph - 4 cars and 1 motorcycle passed me.
final run 80mph + 2 cars, 1 corvette and 1 new mini passes me, and the corvette driver looked back and frowned, the mini driver gave me the high sign.

Conclusions: not sure if this is curiosity, aggression, jealousy or ignorance, but there seems to be a tendency for LBC's to attract attention and drivers who want to prove that they can overtake your 45 year old technology.

I hope to repeat this test again later this season unless I get a speeding ticket.

Oh, almost forgot to mention that the TR250 drove like a dream!

Cheers

Ain't just LBCs. I can't tell you how often them buggers pass me at a high rate of speed, I keep mine the same and eventually repass them.
They do it to me in my 50 F-1 and 50 Tudor.
I have been known to kick the Tudor out of overdrive, drop it back in when engine revs dictate, and fly past them at 120.
Frowns is not what you get...it's amazement. 60+ year old "obsolete" iron can do that, and still get 26MPG at 55 in OD.

The picture with the sun shining on the wheels and red line tires makes your car look like a life size Hot Wheels!! Very cool!!!

I think it's couriosity. Happens to me and my car isn't near as nice. I will say this, women LOVE the TR6. it's not just, "I like your car" looks, it's, "Hey big Daddy, take me for a ride". I've never had that happen with any other car.

I'm married so needless to say the 6 is for sale....seriously.

Mmmm Hot Wheels

I've experienced the same thing, and think it's a combination of all you theories. The most pleasing attention my big Healey gets is when it's sitting still. I don't have to worry about some @(*$^# cutting me off on the freeway to try to identify a car they've never seen. I'm not as kind though, and usually drop down out of O/D and mash the pedal. The rear of the Healey is just as beautiful.

The biggest problem I have is backwoods arseclowns passing me up then spinning out in front of me at a stop sign slinging rocks everywhere.

It's not to be vendictive, rather; "That thing gotta Hem'mi" metality.

Luckily nothing has been damaged yet. That's one reason I haven't painted the car yet.

I think I'll Pass-over this one.
