An up-date

Just to let anyone know who might be interested - I have purchased a TR6 engine for my project (the GT6 engine was toast) and as a result I have placed my spare TR4A shortblock in the classified section. I am in the process of determining what to do the the SAH engine: rebuild or refresh, sell or store. Suggestions are always welcome.

Hi Ray, I would certainly keep the SAH engine which came with the car as it is part of the history, and also an unusual and desirable example of period tuning from the 1960s. I think Sid Hurrell used "Hurricane" as the trade name for the tuning parts he developed,possibly Triumph's use of the name Spitfire for the smaller car suggested this to him.
His son Terry continued the Triumphtune business for several years, at least into the TR7/8 era.
Just my suggestion, of course!

Thanks Simon, I actually had the pleasure of speaking to Terry at TriumphTune in 2000 when I first aquired the car and was trying to find out the significance of SAH. Very nice guy.

A piece like that engine - with true history and rarity - can make the difference between a $9700 TR4 and a $97,000 one at an auction.

Of course, as fickle as auctions can be, it also might not make any difference at all! It sort of depends on who is in the audience, if they know what they are looking at, how much they have to spend, and if they have some stiff competition on that particular day.

You do make a good point - it is a rare and unique engine(at least here in the US) If I keep it, it's basically going to be 'stuffed and mounted' as I don't see going back to it anytime in the future.

Refreshing it and selling would free up some cash to move forward with my rebuild of the car, plus allow someone who has an appreciation of the engine and it's history to benefit from it.

A full out rebuild would cause the engine to lose it's uniqueness and character in my opinion, so I've pretty much decided against that approach.

It would have been so much simpler if it had been any other TR that I found in the junkyard /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif I think I need a drink /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif
