AMPS meter is pegged to the charging side ???

My TR4 Amps meter is pegged to the charging side and will not move whether the car is running or off. Suggestions will be appreciated for tracing the problem.
 
Hopefully it was a momentary spike that stuck it to one side. Often you can un-stick it by giving it a good rap. If not, then disconnect the battery, remove the guage from the dash, and then the glass and trim ring can be removed from the guage by giving it about a quarter turn.
This should give you access enough to un-stick the needle mechanism.
If you hook it back up, and it does it again, then you've got problems. I.E. bad voltage regulator, or shorted cell in the battery.
 
I agree with Banjo. In a Spitfire I once owned the tach did not work (or so I thought). One day I gave it a couple of good whacks and the needle all of a sudden jumped into action. Hopefully yours is just stuck as well.
 
Careful when rapping that ammeter. I got away with it a number of times, but the last time the glass lens broke and I didn't think I tapped it particularly hard. Try tapping the dash immediately next to the gauge instead. (I have since replaced the generator with an alternator and the ammeter with a voltmeter.)
 
The fault is almost certainly mechanical rather than electrical. The current needed to peg and keep the meter there constantly would melt most wiring or run the battery down. If tapping the guage or more forceful knocks against the nearby dash don't jar it loose the guage may have to be pulled out. You should be able to remove the bezel and glass and gently loosen the stuck needle. If not successful, I'd then suspect some greater damage may have been done to the internals.
