Thousands of years ago, when I was young ... I was on tour with an orchestra. We stopped in a small town for an overnight, sponsored by the local church, and broke into small groups to stay with families.

After dinner and some conversation, me and my roommate saw the father of the household come out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel. He said "I left you some bathwater in the tub, in case you want a bath". The family's tradition was Father bathes first, then Mother, then the children. All in the same water.

Nasty! Mind's eye conjures up a large galvanized steel vessel. Last in line would at least have the warmest water...

Back in the old west that was common tradition. (So I've read)

I think I read somewhere that is where the saying "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water" came from. no idea if it is true or not but sounds like it could be!
