I'm trying to identify the aluminum alloy used for the front and rear shrouds on my 56 BN4. Does anybody have the info, or if there is an updated compatible equivalent? I need to do some patching, and don't want to screw it up! Thanks for any help I can get!

16 S.W.G. aluminium-manganese alloy to B.S. 1470 N.S.3.
 
Thanks, after digging around in the Brit. Standards it looks like B.S.1470 is also our 1050, which is avail. here.
 
B.S.1470 is not the alloy designation. The NS3 is what you need to cross reference. From what I can find, it most closely crosses to 3103.
That said, I believe that 3003 is more commonly used by those who create aluminum body panels. Back in another life I worked for a firm that cut, machined and sold aluminum. 3003 was purchased by a few specialty shops for this purpose.
 
3003 is virtually the same alloy and it is readily available here in the US up to 4' x 8' sheets. It is easily weldable, easy to anneal and relatively inexpensive. Buy it in the .060 thickness ( maybe its .062") to use as repair material for your front and rear shrouds.
 
Nearly thirty (<30) years ago, I had a good-ol-boy Cajun aluminum boat & truck bumper builder do the aluminum repairs on my car; sectioned two (2) rear shrouds to make one (1) and some flange and tear repairs to the front shroud.

I can guarantee that he didn't use anything special, but he sure could handle a TIG torch! I had told him ahead of time that they were notoriously hard to weld, but he felt otherwise. I believe his name was Pat Miller, if you ever need any aluminum work down around Opelousas, LA!
