alternator up-date

I asked about the alternator light last week-got lots of help. The plug looked iffy. I could not find another so I took apart the old one - recrimped and soldered per Jack's tips - plugged it in and drove. There was no light for about 5 miles, then opps, there was a shiny bright red light on the dash where it did not belong. Drove home feeling a failure.
But not ready to quit. Diodes I would not tackle, but maybe brushes. So I removed the alternator and one was shorter than the other by half. I switched them and put it all back together in time for an evening run. No Light. I am a happy guy and thank you very much.
So, how much time did I give myself? This alternator is only 2 years old.
