How difficult is it to convert the generator to an alternator on the BJ7? What type of alternator can be used? There is an alternator for an MGB on ebay. Will this fit the Healey?

Thanks,

Ray

I just changed my BT7 to an alternator and the hardest part was deciding which alternator to use. I didn`t go with a big Delco I used a small internally regulated Hitachi 60 amp. It was really simple I used a long grade 8 bolt with spacers I turned on the lathe and an alternator bracket from the junkyard. I used the original wires for the sense and light and had to make a large wire to charge back to the battery and ran that from the alternator to the starter solenoid. Clean, neat and works like a million bucks. I can e mail pics if you want. Skip

I had very bad luck with the Lucas alternator supplied by DW--the diode was mounted in plastic and the whole thing melted down very quickly. I returned it for a refund (lost on the shipping) but kept the nice aluminum mount.

Because the front pulley on BN1's uses a wider belt than normal I purchased a 70 amp Prestolite (Leece-Neville)alternator that had a two-piece shimmable pulley and have had no problems with it. I can't give you a part number now but it is a standard item at alternator shops and can be found on Prestolite's website if you dig hard.

I guess I don't understand the reason to change to an alternator. Most generators can be rebuilt quite reasonably and if kept lubricated will last a very long time.
