Well I'm putting in my new Hitachi alternator and ran in to a connection I'm not familuar with.
On the plug socket of the alternator is the following

BAT self explanatory

E earth ground spade connector on case

F Field connection

( N )............what the heck is N ? the N connection is next to the F connection turned 90 degress.

Any Ideas?
Its a 50 amp Small body 83"Izuzu PUP unit.

Typically there are only two connections of importance on an alternator: the output and the connection for the ignition idiot light. On most alternators the latter is usually labeled D+. Often, alternators have other connections, but you can almost always ignore these.

As for the Hitachi, I don't know which of the two remaining (N or F) should be used for the ignition light. My guess would be the field. The remaining one might be a sense connection, so you can regulate the voltage at some point other than the alternator connection itself. I'm just speculating though, so you should search around on the net to see if you can get something more specific.
