A couple of ya'll seem to know everything's to know. 1985 XJ6, The stopping power isn't that great. Does any one sell braided steel brake lines for said car, & are there aftermarket replacement disk brake for the rear? I'd like to change from drums to disk...

The 85 X6 is equipped with disc brakes in front and rear. The rear brakes are mounted inboard against the differential

Yes, inboard discs at the rear......a pain in the nether regions to change the pads, and the handbrake pads are there too. Actually, the brakes on any XJ series car should be very good, so you are on the right track with the braided lines. One thing that you should do first is to renew the brake fluid though. If it has not been changed in a while, that is your most likely cause, as the fluid absorbs water from the air and loses its effectiveness over time. This is the cheapest way to start, although braided hoses are not going to set you back too much. Good luck.

Viceroy,

If you think you don't have much stopping power, check your power brake booster. If it takes alot of effort with your leg to stop the car, you may have a leaky brake booster. You may hear a hissing sound when you apply the brakes if this is the case. Just something to check, but if you totally lose the power assist, it is very difficult to stop the car and very dangerous. I have the cracked elbow to prove it.

I think Brian has hit the nail on the head. The XJ6, series 3 sedans should have excellent brakes even with normal brake pads. If you are experiencing weak brakes on your XJ6, look at malfunctions in the system. Change the brake fluid and make sure that the power brake booster is fully effective. The booster servo might need reconditioning and that could produce weak brakes by itself.

PS. The rear brake pads produce about 40% of the stopping power. You might have a malfunction in the rear calipers or the brake line leading to them. Because of the inconvenient location of the inboard rear calipers, they are very often neglected and fall into disrepair. If the rear calipers are not actuating you will have functional but weak braking. Put the rear end on jack stands and actuate the brakes while someone turns the rear wheels to assure that the calipers are working.
