The Bugeye is a real "Spriget" As I told Jack Laird when he was looking for his car a few years ago, buy a complete car not a rolling chassis like I did. My car is a 1960 Bugeye, but since I started with just the tub, rear end, worn out front suspention and a badly rusted-bent bonnet (bought 3) I had to buy EVERYTHING else. The car is far from a restoration, it will be used as a fun driver and along the way I'll still be looking for and replacing non original parts.
The paint is a Artic White Acrylic Enamel that I shot myself ( It's almost idiot proof ).The stripes are vinyl tape. The interior is a dark blue carpeting and black leatherette side pannels. The dash is from a Midget and has the black speedo and tack, along with Auto Zone black oil and temp gauges and a am-fm c/d radio(car is converted to neg. ground).Although not original the dash looks prety good.
The luggage rack was bought off of E Bay and the hardware came with it. The mounting bolts appear to be stainless carriage bolts that have been polished.
Since I bought the car in March of 2005 my work has been:
2005 Strip entire body to bare metal & prime, replace rockers and floorboards make interior pannels, buy parts.
2006 Total rebuild of rear suspention, springs, shocks, radius rods, breaks, seals, differential and buy parts.
2007 BAD YEAR found the front drivers side frame was bent { car was wrecked in 1977 and sat untill I bought it in 2005) Frame was supposed to have been repaired - WASN'T. I sent the car to a highly reccomended frame shop in September 2007. They got into more work than they imagined and stopped working on the car while the front end was torn up and just let it set outdoors. After we went to court they threw it together and slapped me with a $1,987.00 bill ( that I had to pay ). I still have to get the front frame extentions welded back on so the bonnet and raidiator will line up properly. I brought the car back home in Feb. 2008. At least the frame is straight.
2008 till now, Complete front end rebuild, springs, shocks, bushings, king pins, tie rod ends, brakes. Finished final sanding and painted the car. I'm now installing a new wiring harness and still have to install the front brake lines. Then the 1275 and transmission will go in this Fall. Will install the interior also. Seats are original but probably wont get done untill next Spring. At any rate thats been my bugeye project for the last 3 years and still going.
