Alloy valve cover functional, or 'just' eye candy?

Do they actually offer any benefits beyond looking great?

Other than eye candy, they may actually muffle valve noise a little, but other than that, a valve cover is just a valve cover!!

I think they muffle the sound significantly, and I think they make it easier to get good seal around the gasket. ... or maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better about spending $45 bucks on something shiny?

A long time ago I seem to recall a vendor saying that the fins on the cover helped with cooling. But is that really the case? It beats me! I wish I could remember what catalog I saw that in. It goes waaaaay back.

The major advantage with the Aluminium valve cover is that they fit over 1.5 rockers while the standard valve cover will not.

What about using them with PCV systems? Are the caps vented, or do you have to drill a hole somewhere?

I can't see any benifit to one. If you have that much valve noise then maybe you need to regap the valves when hot and see how much is there.

They cut the noise a little, until you put in the 1.5 roller rockers to find that now theres a loud tapping coming from the rollers crashing into the side of the alloy cover. You may need to grind a relief into the upper corner of the alloy cover to clear some brands of rollers.

The alloy cover I got for my sprite has a spot on the top where you can drill a hole and put in a fitting. After drilling a hole in the cover, I tapped it to fit a right angle brass fitting to which I connected the breather hose to the air filter.
