...that I am now COMPELLED to fiddle with some alloy engine mods. I've had a set of Alfa short-duration 11mm lift cams burnin' a hole in me pocket for a WHILE now. Today I checked Luigi's valve clearances and find I'll need to do some shim juggling...

Y'all ~SEE~ where this is goin' don't-cha!?! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I'm all set up: TDC spot-on, about to lift the 9.5mm cams out. If I just "trial fit" the hotter bump-stix mebbe it'll be outta my system.

mehheh... shurrrr. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

"Cover me. I'm goin' in!"

heh heh heh

it's every man for himself at this point! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Doc, As much as you can be a pain in the backside at times (in good natured fun Of course /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif ), I'd never wish on you what I'm going through right now.

But you know what they say about karma?.... So be careful, take yer time & have a steddy hand.

Good luck!

4 or 5 CABs ought to take car of that!

My karma ran over my dogma? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

ewww... another *mess* on th' path to enlightenment, no doubt.

There was a moment: Phone rang as I had the last cam cap of three *just* ready to remove. I ~flinched~ and a nut and spring washer went: "BOINK!! plinkety-plinkety-plinkety-TINK!"

..spent time grovelin' around on hands-and-knees... found th' nut immediately. Had distinctly heard the washer fall externally as well but probed in the sand for a while with "no joy". Took a wand magnet to the trough and all internal areas... Sniped a washer from the pile of spares and went on. Found the errant one onna ground after the car was finished and moved.

I've an assortment of shims, a "dealership" assortment. Do you think there was a 0.074" in there? I needed TWO of 'em. Two of the exhaust tappets are a bit snug now. Only a thou. But I gotta say: I shoulda done this cam swap a LOT sooner! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

WHEEE!!!! Th' BARK o' th' WEBERS!!!

What a relief - glad to hear it Doc. And here I’d gone and anticipated the worse & went ahead and calculated what it’d cost to ship my Sawsall back to you for a loaner.

Sorry to have ever doubted you. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I have a gen-you-wine Milwaukee SawzAll. Save th' shippin' charge...

...but I appreciate th' concern. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I just wish your garage an' mine were more geographically akin.

'course THAT'd likely be some BIG trouble sooner or later. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

...and I don't mean between you an' me. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Me too! What's that they say about great mines.....?

They're deep and produce for years?!?! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Oops!?!? Typo on my part Doc, but when I think about it - "Minds?" vs. "Mines?" I think it still works in our cases. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

meh.

Well, I just couldn't STAND the idea there was a tight valve under there, sooo...

Yesterday I popped the cam-cover back off and got out the feeler gauges 'n micrometer again. Now the intakes are ALL at 0.019" and exhaust are all 0.020". Had to hand lap 0.003" from one shim to get the #4 exhaust correct. Only took an HOUR with #600 wet-or-dry, mineral oil and "figure eights" on a metal flat. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Dialed in a bit of overlap, mebbe too much. That means I will pro'lly go into it again today to do a bit more tweakin'.

...Work, work, work... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Don't you just love sittin' there making figure eights while trying not to sand off yout finger tips. Fun stuff... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Yeah, Shawn. ALMOST as thrillin' as paintin' baseboards.

I got a reprieve: a friend kindly came by with his Ponyak Sunturkey early inna AM so I got to change out the serpentine belt on a GM V-6 and charge up his A/C. Next Bro show'd in his Del Sol with what we thought was a weeping dizzy O-ring... wasn't the O-ring, rather the "VTEC" filter unit.
What th' heck is a VTEC, anyhoo? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Then Cowboy came by with a box full of CABs in his B... the friend with the GM car came back with MORE CABs, some sourdough pretzels and a big jar of pickles... the day turned into a BS session in front of the garage.
All-in-all a pretty good Sunday! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Sounds like your CAB fridge got a quick refill as well. Did the BS session empty it again. I'll have to swing down there one of these days...

That stocked the hovel for a few days' worth! Still plenty left and I know where to get more, so c'mon DOWN! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Pulled some of the lead out of the intake stick and now the thing runs sweet. Have it about 5 degrees ahead and the exhaust the same behind.
Nice li'l BURBLE now. Pulls like a MULE after 3.5K RPM, too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Careful Doc!

All that extra power is gonna shake all that loose paint right off... before ya know it your going to have it stripped to a gazzillion pieces and you'll have to dig out one of those Elans to drive

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Oh yeah... I've been on a hiatus for way too long... What is up with the B??? I don't have time to go digging through all these old posts.

It's in mortal danger of becoming a planter unless I get after it soon. This cam swap is kinda 'motivational'. Next is a good long session with the oil pump. Has a relief valve built in and I think it's beginning to by-pass too much. Have a replacement, but it means a TON of NASTY effort to get to the thing.

The B... Well, it's still here. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Haven't done much to it since you left. Been fussin' more with clients' LANs and household -stuff- than LBC's lately. I gotta DO somethin' about that. This "work" stuff is cuttin' into my goofin' off time seriously.
