Alfa wearin' [out] a speedo [cable].

The Alfa clock went to zero on me last week onna Interstate, it just dropped like a stone. The cable is routed OVER the front silencer, would be the cat converter on a "normal" Spider. Over time the heat melts the sheath and allows water ingress.

Now ya'd think a thing like a speedo cable would be fairly common, even on an old Alfa... NOT. NAPA ~used~ to have the inner stuff by the foot, would cut it and smush the ends for ya. Those days are gone, apparently.

Had to order the thing from my fave Alfa parts house out in Colorado. Shipping was 33.3% of the expense. And a week of drivin' on th' tach, one eye on th' mirror.

Wallow'd around on my back in the driveway this AM and replaced the old one. Both inner AND outer pieces were severed right at the point where they go over the hot box. Fishin' the new one thru the firewall and around the wiring and stuff under the dash was the time consuming part. A ten-year-old would have been helpful. A lazy hour's effort.

This is cautionary info for Kenny, Rick and Terri: Have a spare lyin' about. The way it's routed, it's inevitable you'll be replacin' one.

There's no way to re-route it a little so it isn't so close to the exhaust? And/or, put some heat tape on it?

Drivin' on the tach sounds familiar, though. Our B has the famous Smiths Dancin' Speedo Needle. Always good for a laff.

The way the Spider is laid out and the place on the transmission where the cable attaches makes it nearly impossible to shield the cable. There are even "access holes" formed in the cross brace to allow the cable to be attached. No other routing possible.

Its an Alfa, everything isn't supposed to work.

It has the obligatory non-functioning heater motor and the "intermittent wipers" live up to th' term.

I'd rather know how fast I'm goin' than to have to say: "Ummm... by th' tach I suspect I was doin' around 70, Sir."
