Basil and others,
I will be in New Mexico over the Presidents' Weekend, and we are needing to rethink a few of our planned activities since my wife's heart attack a month ago. We were going to El Morro, the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, and Acoma, but now that her walking is more restricted and I do not want to tire her out, we are considering the Zoo, and of course will return to Old Town, and probably go up to Santa Fe on the light rail one day. We have already done Tinkertown, the Sandia Tramway and the Natural History museum as well as the Unser museum. What other attractions should we consider.

I also have Kelly's Brew Pub and the 66 Diner on our list for possible meals. Now that we are trying to eat low fat, low salt, and we are not hot chile oriented, are there any places we should consider for this trip. It will definitely be different than our normal vacations.

If your going to Santa fe a fantastic place to eat is La Choza. It's more of a locals place but the food is fantastic and very reasonable if your looking for new Mexican food. I highly recommend the chicken enchiladas with green chile are killer. The chile is mild but tons of flavor.

It's a good thing your going to take the train as new mexican drivers are freaking NUTS

If you're looking for a healthy breakfast check out LaPeep on Louisiana right off of I-40. If you're headed east on 40, take the off ramp and turn left headed north. At the second traffic light you will see it on your left. They have great omelets that are made with egg whites only and can be had with fresh fruit. No toast offerred, only English muffins.

Give a call when you're in town and perhaps some of us LBC owners can meet and greet with you? I'll pm you my number. Also you may consider a drive to Madrid. Great shopping and quite interesting.

Dittos what Judy said! Madrid, by the way, is where John Travolta, et al., filmed the movie "Wild Hogs." Some of the road scenes happen just up the road from where Judy and I live.

'Healthy' & 'breakfast' in the same sentence....

If it doesn't have eggs over medium, grits, soft fried bacon, biscuits & gravy it ain't breakfast.....occassionally, though, you might substitute the eggs with a 3-egg green pepper, onion, & ham omelet, grits and biscuits.

'Healthy"? That ain't breakfast! That's fru-fru, girley stuff!

hehehehe....

 Spoken like a true "Southern Gentleman."

Not for breakfast....but, other meals? Pretty much. So, I guess our Southern breakfasts might be considered 'healthy'!

Thanks all (except maybe Tony). I did drive the Turquoise Trail with a stop in Madrid a few years back. Maybe we will add an excursion to Gallup. Our son has a few visits with friends thrown in (I think so we can take them out to dinner) plus some time with his USAFA room mate and family (new baby time). Would a trip to Los Alamos have anything worth seeing? This will probably be our last New Mexico trip for a bit with him leaving for Okinawa soon and I want to have hit at least some of the best spots.

If you haven't seen White Sands...you may consider it. Alamogordo isn't that far and Ruidoso is a short drive from there. Lincoln and Capitan are nearby also and are very interesting. Small villages...short walks. And what would a trip to New Mexico be without a trip to the UFO meseum in Roswell??? But being New Mexico drivers are such crazy drivers...you may want to reconsider.

If your going to gallup a fantastic hole in the wall place to eat is el sombrero. Great for breakfast lunch or dinner and they have some of the best sopapillas I've ever had.

What? You don't like a good breakfast that'll stick with you until a light lunch? And get you through to a great steak dinner?

Yep I'm used to LA crazy however new Mexican crazy is total different but don't worry you guys are still better than complete lunatics around slc and the I15 corridor. I don't think its possible to get pulled over there till you are triple digits above the speed limit while in a construction zone, tail gating a bus full of preschoolers in fog and snowing. I have seen Winnebago's break the laws of physics and pass me on the road while flying a plane along the highway at 110mph. Of course that was pre $4 gas.

I just got an update on weather up in Brooklands' stompin' grounds... temps in the high 50s, low 60s. But the WINDS are as high as 60MPH!!! YIKES!!!

DAAAVE!!! You still THERE?!?!

During my brief stay there in April, I enjoyed "El Pinto", the Route 66 Cafe, and a great little Mexican restaurant just off of the square with the church in Old Town. That's where I learned how to order "Christmas style".

We also ate at an "upscale restaurant" somewhere along the Route 66 strip one evening. It was packed...and it was OK...but nothing to write home about. It was located in a small strip mall across the street from what appeared to be a head shop with a rocket ship on top.
