"AIRBAG" Light - What to Do?

I finally found a truck to replace the '94 Dakota with.
My question is.....the "AIRBAG" light is on.Can I sell it "as-
is" this way,or do I need to have it fixed beforehand? It's about $175 to have diagnosed/repaired.

The airbag light on my 2007 Santa Fe is staying on and teh dealer said the cause was a broken spring inside the steering column. $90 to diagnose and about $265 to fix (which I intend to do soon).

Re: "AIRBAG" Light - What to Do?

I have no idea about California, but in NY an air-bag light will not keep the car from passing inspection. Besides that there is no law about it being the sellers responsibility to make sure the vehicle is in any certain condition in a private sale. Those laws only apply to dealerships. Just be sure to put "as-is" on the bill of sale, and keep a copy for yourself.
It's up to the buyer to decide if they want to deal with that issue.

Re: "AIRBAG" Light - What to Do?

My tuppence worth: it would be dishonest not to disclose a defect in a car that is known to the seller/owner. I can't see any way around this, period. I know how I'd feel if it happened to me (and it has).

I'd either fix it, or disclose it. To do otherwise would be, well . . . :nonono:

Glad you added that. I had it typed in on Friday after he posted it,...but... thought I'd give Doug a break

Doug, find out what it cost to fix, then decide

No inspections in California. In a private sale I don't believe there is any rule whatsoever about airbags working or not.

Re: "AIRBAG" Light - What to Do?

If it's within the OBD II system, you should be able to check the code, correct it if possible and erase it from the dash. It will still appear on the computer and you should inform the new owner. The light probably comes on automatically at a certain mileage to inform the owner it should be serviced.

I had the clock spring (under the horn cover) replaced, but that wasn't the problem.
I have no intention of hiding this from the buyer.I'd rather sell it cheaper than spend more money on it that I'll never get back.

I also have an air bag light on in my family workhorse. Not a Dodge, but I think SRS is pretty ubiquitous. In mine it is the baby carrier warning switch in the seat. It 'thinks' there is a small passenger all the time and cancels the air bags after every restart. The dealer cost to replace the seat switch is almost $500. So we just pretend we have a grandkid  The shadetree fix is to put 22000 ohms of resistence across the plug under the seat and fool the computer (dealership mechanic told me privately), which I may do some time. No rush, it's been 4 years of dash lights now.

Re: "AIRBAG" Light - What to Do?

Just for clarification, I was not recommending not telling/ hiding it from the buyer, just saying it's not a legal responsibility of the seller to fix it. I know Doug would not do that to a perspective buyer. And sometimes it can be an advantage to not know what's specifically wrong. It's not fun telling someone looking to buy something from you that you know it needs $1200 worth of work (Which I've done) sometimes it's better to be able to truthfully say, "I dunno, the light's been on for a while, I never looked into it"

Re: "AIRBAG" Light - What to Do?

My mini van had a brake light on so long it burned out. Brakes seemed fine for years then the boost went out. With 250K on the clock I wasn't about to put any cash into it and just used it occasionally for moving stuff. Needed both feet to stop most times. About the same time I was looking into getting the state to pay me $1000 to take it off the road, I was getting it ready to lend to the wife, she needed an auto shift car after knee replacement, I found out the ABS pump was under a lifetime replacement recall. So after the dealer fixed the pump I had great brakes again, installed a fresh brake warning light, bought new Pirelli tires, fixed an errantly aimed and dis-colored headlights, renewed registration and installed a rear camera which she hates. Still needs a slight coolant leak repair. I might get a few more miles out of the old beast yet.
