MGB-GT air temperature control valve

Hello to all...curious as to the purpose/usefulness of this device as related to a de-smogged engine? I live in southern Florida and the weather is always nice and warm so if there is not a problem with removing it I would like to as it rattles (needs new foam seal on the edges) and is not particularly attractive hanging on the side of the engine. the car has the original stock ZS and runs well and has 42K miles. If safe to remove which way would you recommend rotating the air inlet to the air filter? would it be wise to screen over the opening where the valve was attached? all useful comments appreciated, thanks in advance...

Yup, off with it. A piece of screen will keep the 'big pieces' out. We are fortunate that Florida doesn't have smog testing. Cooler heads prevailed!
