Air filter box color?

I bought an original air filter box assembly, with the hoses, on Ebay and I'm restoring it for my GT6. I've got it down to the bare metal and wondering exactly what color the original box was.

I think it was some shade of grey or silver. Can anyone who has painted their airbox tell us what color paint they used?

Thanks!

Mark, on my "67, as well as the spare '67 engine, the air box is gloss, or semi-gloss black. It's hard to tell now what the original finish was, but they are both definitely black. The pictures in the factory manual also show black. I don't know if this is correct for your later model or not.

for the TR6...silver chrome spray paint. Make sure it's high heat resistant. I would assume it would be the same color for the GT6.

The air cleaner box on my '72 GT6 is red. I'm not sure it is original, but it is old, faded and no other color shows through. Of course mine also has a chrome valve cover, which appears original but isn't shown in any references I have found.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, guys.

The original color for the valve cover and airbox was silver, a rather darkish shade. Like Andre, mine has a chrome valve cover, so the original silver color really wouldn't look right for the airbox.

I show this car, but I'm not in it for concours judging. So I may paint it either black,to match the engine block, or safron to match the rest of the car.

Don't you just love it when someone asks for advice and then does something completely contrary?

Anyway, thanks!

Airboxes were black through 1968. When the TR-6 debuted for 1969, airboxes became a light gray for both the 6 and GT6.
