Air cleaners / carb needles

Recently had engine rebuilt and carburetors rebushed. 76B with 2 HS4's. This setup necessitates a low profile air cleaner since anything over about an in inch in height won't fit on rear carburetor due to brake unit. Carbs presently have AAA needles. Is this possibly running too rich (getting poor gas mileage - about 20 mpg - Should I maybe go to AAE). Plugs look great, however. Nice tan color running 93 octane. What would anyone recommend for air cleaners. As I said, presently using cleaners about 1" high with foam that has been cut as filter element.
 
Well, I think if they're tan, then you should be in the right ball park with the needles and filter elements. You might want to try and lean it a flat or so to lighten the shade of tan just a bit. Although, if it's running great, I personally would leave it as is.
 
I have not installed them yet, but Moss has a tapered air filter that is supposed to be best for this situation.

I have Stellings & Hellings filters from Moss. They're 6 inches in diameter, 1 inch thick in the middle (without the mounting bolt) and taper to about 3/4 inch at the outside edge.
