T-Series air cleaner/ noise suppressor

Has anyone taken apart the MG TC air cleaner/noise suppressor without damaging it? I would like to disassemble it in order to have the parts powder coated but it looks like you need a can opener. Obviously the can opener would damage it beyond repair, any ideas?

I'm a chicken - I wouldn't dare try to pry that apart. Cleaning/de-rusting and some POR15 might be an alternative.
