AI video fraud on YouTube

Fell for a while today for two YouTube videos about supposed goings on in U.S. District Courts involving witness bribery by a criminal defendant and Govt. payments to one of their star witnesses in another criminal case. Film and sound featured Rachel Maddow in one and Lawrence O'Donnell in the other. One disappeared while we weren't paying attention and, when we went looking for it a message from YouTube said it had shut down the channel. I had become suspicious when Maddow said "mash that like button" and said "present" (short e meaning time) as if it were "present" (long e meaning give to). Otherwise, these clips looked and sounded VERY real. The ability to prepretrate this kind of visual and auditory hoax alarms me and seems quite dangerous (War of the Worlds panic, anyone). I am wondering if AI may lead to the need to amend the 1st Amendment.

So sad - and scary - that millions of people unquestionably believe whatever they see on the "screen", swiping merrily away, and sending the video links to everyone they know.

There simply aren't enough people to vet all these monstrosities that are popping up on social media and YT by the thousands every minute, in every language, in every country.

Bob - thanks for sharing your experience!

As AI "learns" and the tech improves it'll be able to create nearly anything on video and audio. And there are enough bad actors round the world who will exploit it do get true believers in pretty much anything to follow and get upset and who knows what actions they may take. It's compounded by the fact that so many these days don't know how to judge truth -v- fiction in what they watch, they have no knowledge of the overall facts and history behind most of what is out there today. And when it comes to videos of people saying or doing things, if you weren't there verifying may be impossible.

I approach everything with skepticism and use a variety of sources across the spectrum to try to verify or reject what I may see/hear plus use my being a history buff to try to determine how true anything may be. It's not 100% effective, but better than just saying it's on the net, must be real.

Mike - bravo! Now we just need to get a couple hundred million others to follow your model.

...there are enough bad actors round the world...
Related to this: the definition of "bad" changes from person to person. If someone is using AI to help Mother Teresa, it's OK, but if it is helping Adolf Hitler it is bad.

...but there is a whole lot of gray in between those, where a critical mass of people become Machiavellian. Checks and balances may not always act as intended, and bad actors get implicit support.

And my statement is meant only to cover those out to cause harm, either physically, mentally or financially to others

Mike - you may be describing a growing portion of YT and social media posts!

Oh yea, posts daring youngsters to do stupid things for example. While I do use YT some, it's mostly to see if I can find music, stuff I already know or things I heard in a TV show or movie I liked. Rest of it, don't really care about. And the only social media posts tend to be when someone copies one into something else I might read.

Reminds me of a reference from the old 80's MAX HEADROOM movie - one of the characters tells another that soon they will be able to computer generate a person so lifelike you won't know its not your own mother. The other character replies that keeping all your politicians in little boxes could be very handy. That show has turned out to be way more accurate in its prediction of society than I am comfortable with.

Prediction? How 'bout the movie Idiocracy ...?

With Musk's prediction to build billions of robots where each will have at least one to run errands do housework,do your job and basically everything while we sit at home, perhaps Terminator should be on that list of potential futures. Musk has said they will be able to talk to each other and be much much smarter than any human...

Rosey was doing robotic chores (with an attitude) a long time ago
