Is there a way to remove the solenoid for the overdrive without pulling the engine/transmission?
I can see it from underneath when up on jack stands but no room to work on removal appears possible.
I can see it through the shift lever hole in the top of the tunnel. Likewise, no room to work.
Is there a way to remove the tunnel to get to the solenoid?
Sorry if this is a repeat thread. I searched but couldn't find an answer.
No good info in the only shop manual I have.
Thanks in advance for any help.

It's been a while since I did this type of job, but I believe you'll need to remove the transmission tunnel for good access to it. It's best to be sure you have a bad solenoid first before going to all this work.

Thanks. I am only assuming it is bad.
Dash switch works and the relay functions normally
I established through the gear shift access port that there is power to the solenoid.
It only emits an anemic click though. Cant see if it is moving from below or above.
Anything else I should do first before pulling the tunnel?
Anything special to know about pulling the tunnel? I have never done it.

Remove the centre console pull up the carpets and unbolt the tunnel from the floor . Pulling the seats out helps to . The solenoid may just be gummed up with dirt/ corrosion on the plunger or you may have a dirty wiring connection at the solenoid . Either way your pulling the tunnel . You could choose to cut an access hole in the side of the tunnel and make it into a door with a simple hinge and clip closure for easier access for service down the road if needed .

Thanks for your suggestions.
Can you tell me where to start about removing the center arm/rest/console?
It sure seems fastened down tight and I assumed it would come off with the tunnel.
I like your idea of an access port and will definitely do that.

Pull out the seats , leave the seat rails in . Take off the armrest it will have screws holding it to the driveshaft tunnel . Look under the dash and remove the screws in the wings of the console .remove the screw at the gearshift end of the tunnel into the fibreglass tunnel. Disconnect the radio wiring if you have it . Pull the rubber gearshift gaiter out . Lift out the console . Pull up the carpets , remove screws holding the Fiberglass tunnel to the floor . Disconnect speedo cable and pull the tunnel out .

Thanks
that is a good set of directions.
I will tackle it this weekend (provided it isn't a sunny "Healey day"

I just did this job. All will become clear after you remove the tunnel.

On my car, the screws for the console are beside the console up into the dash and on top of the tunnel behind the radio area. There will be another screw somewhere near the back of the console but yours will be different than my '64 BJ8.

Remove the shift knob. Watch out when you lift the console over the shifter as it can mess up the leather around the shift boot.

There are clamps that hold down the tunnel. There should be a seal around the front and sides of the tunnel so it might not come up easy. The speedometer cable runs through the tunnel so you will need to lift it a bit and undo the cable.

Put down some paper to ensure that dirt or oil from the transmission don't get on your carpet.

If you swap out the solenoid, you might need to recalibrate the throw-out distance (search the forum for instructions). You can drive the car without the tunnel to make sure it is all working before you button it back up.

If your tunnel does not have good sealant or insulation, this would be a good opportunity to improve that before you put it back together.
