After having owned both of these cars, wondering what are the differences between both of these engines (are they really significant?) and why wouldent BMC just use the Healey engine in the MGC?

The engines are totally different, I doubt there's a single component common to both (save for some of the nuts and bolts).

For starters, the block was redesigned and is a seven main bearing unit that is about 1.75" shorter. The head doesn't breathe as well (I'm pretty sure the valves as well as the ports are smaller).

And it just doesn't rev like a proper Healey!

Edit: the redesign came about to comply with upcoming emission standards. Ironically the saloon that the engine was destined for didn't fare any better.

The performance (or lack of) was the MGC's downfall. I think the handling could've been worked out, but without the "scoot", nobody wanted to try (okay, John Chatham is the exception).

I had an MGC GT. I drove it from Nyack, NY to Denver, CO (and it snowed big time across Kansas) and back again. Was picked up for speeding coming down through the Loveland Pass. I always enjoyed that car. A car is what you make of it, as any Sprite owner will tell you.

Thanks for the input guy's. I orderd an MGC new when I was In Vietnam, they had offers like that for American cars as well of course ( at the PX). I specified Primrose yellow, convertable and an am/fm radio. Maybe Chrome wire wheels, I forget now. When I returned in December 1969 I was notified my car was in! Slight problem, it was an automatic! Yikes, no thanks. So I never bought that new one, but recognized the advantages of a big six and the overdrive for cruiseing. I guess the lack of R and D money helped doom this whole idea. Also that Stokes fellow had little interest in anything but the Triumphs.

Ray...from which PX compound did you order your new LBC? I ordered mine from the one in Chu Lai!

Hi Tony, I was with Company "L" Marine Support Bn, we were attatched to the Army's 8th Radio Reaserch Bn in Phu Bai, northern "I" Corps. I was debating between the new TR6 and the MGC, I did'nt know ANYTHING about these cars really, just what I saw in the few magazines we recieved.
I do believe I saw advertisments for the Sunbeam Tiger at that time, that was a real "pocket rocket"!
