AH 3000 Colors

My first visit!
Looks interesting, I'll be back. I have own a 61 AH 3000, My father and I purchased it around 24 yrs ago, here in Nova Scotia Canada. We did a ground up resto then. About 10 years ago Dad passed away I got married and the children came... The Healey had wiring problems so it was parked in our "farm museum" along with carriages etc.
This past summer we decided it was time to take the car apart, and "do it right" again. I found a guy I can trust and does good work so here we go!
It is completely apart now and the frame is being checked.

Any hints or suggestions are welcomed. I want the car to be "original" but plan to drive it during the summer.

Where can I go to find good examples of correct colors for a 1961.?

Is there a good manual or books I should have?

This A-OK Basil?

Andrew,

The Factory Workshop Manual that Dave mentions is a must. Also the Anderson/Moment book. Another important book when doing a restoration is the Mechanical Service Parts List that has detailed exploded views and parts callouts for the entire car. Extremely helpful when you are trying to put stuff back together. I believe that soft cover reprints are available throught the AHCUSA (Austin Healey Club USA)
https://www.healey.org/index.shtml

I would also highly recommend getting a copy of the Concours Guidelines. This will describe all the original finishes and construction details. Even if you are not going for Concours judging but are interested in originality it is a must have. https://www.healey.org/concours-registry.shtml

As for colors there is a book with actual color samples by Don Pikovnik. I plan on getting this book soon for my ongoing restoration.

Ajay,
Welcome to BCF.

Most of your questions can be answered by these two books. First I would get;
Factory Workshop Manual Reprints
Shop Manual, Austin-Healey 100-6, 3000
You can see it here;
https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29490

Next I would get this restoration guide;
Austin Healey 100/100-6/3000 Restoration Guide
https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29492
This guide will answer nearly all details on colors & very much more.

This is also a very good reference;
Original Austin Healey by Anders Ditlev Clausager
https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=34518

Or, just ask for help on this forum. There are many folks with a great deal of knowledge to offer. It would help if you let us know your exact car model, BT7, BN7?

John I have the Coloramic book; used it to insure the correct BRG ICI codes for my BJ8. No longer have use for it. It is in mint condition.

Wow what a great site! I feel much more at home with the journey we have ahead of us, My wife Jay & I thank you. I’ll rent the colour book. Ha Ha, Want to sell it? Then I’ll forward it to John? Is that Ok to do on this form? Does it include the combos and interior?

Thanks for the help. I have some of the books on order already, some not. I figure too much info is not an issue at this time.

Andrew,

To start you could take a quick look at Roger Los website. He has an interactive color chart organized by model. This will give you a general idea of the interior and exterior color combinations that are original.

https://austinhealey.com/big.html

I'll let you know what happens with the color book or books that come up. Have you considered joining one of the Healey Clubs? AHCUSA has at least 50 members in Canada or maybe you can search for a local chapter. What's great is some of them have club libraries, loaner tools, tech sessions and fun outings. Of course the Forum here is great ... just want to keep all of your options open. Look forward to hearing more about your restoration as it proceeds.

Cheers,
John

Ajay,

The Anderson/Moment book has a table of color combos. The only difference that I see with Roger Los website is that Colorado Red also had a Black interior with Red piping and the Primrose Yellow with Black coves was not an option. The book goes on to say,"...the standard Healey colors of white, Colorado Red, Healey Blue, black and Florida Green were carried forward from the BN2s. In addition Pacific Green and Primrose were added to the range, but were deleted in the mid-1960."

I really like the Healey Blue with Blue interior color scheme too but I already have a black interior. I'm thinking of British Racing Green which has significance for me as the very first Healey that I rode in (my neighbors) was BRG.

Cheers,
John

Andrew,

I have a complete blue interior for a four seater listed in the classifieds here.

You may not be ready to install it, but it's a pretty good buy on parts that are sure to only go up in cost. Check out the latest Moss Motors catalog for specific details.

Click on the link (blue interior) above...

Roger Moment and Gary Anderson submitted the latest known color schemes to the 2004 Concours Guidelines. They worked closely with John Wheatley, who used the original microfiche build records which is used for Heritage certificates.

Consider purchasing the 2004 version, which will be available in Feb 2004.

Realize that I am a little biased ;-)

Don't know if you have already, but you might consider joining one of the national Austin Healey clubs. Also sending off for the original British Motor Heritage certificate is a must if you wish to go the original route. That will give you the build sheet for your car based on the chassis, body and engine numbers. The build sheet will tell you how the car left the factory including color, interior, and options, such as wire wheels, heater etc.

Thanks John.

Do you agree with the web site for the 1961.? Including the interior combos?
There are 2 all white Healey's and a Red over Black and a few non Healey combos in my area so
I am leaning toward the Healey Blue and Ivory and I guess then I should go with Blue Interior to be correct. I had a chance to go through the member pictures. One thing that is for sure a Healey looks great in any color!
