AH 100-6 Groundiong straps

Good day all. I am now finishing up the elctrical portion of my restoration on a 1958 BN4. I took plenty of pictures as I tore it apart. Unfortunately, not one that shows me how many and where the grounding straps are connected. Other than the obvious one in the trunk from the 'kill' switch to chassis, can anyone elucidate me to the location of the other straps?? Thanks, Ron /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hi Ron,
Below the starter solenoid on the inside of the frame rail, there should be a bolt threaded into the frame. The ground strap should go from there to the engine. I found mine attached to the bell housing bolt just in front of the clutch slave cylinder. I did relocate it somewhere else more convenient, but that place eludes my brain at the moment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

Greg, Thanks for the info. Ron

Hi Ronzet, take the ground stap from the location provided by Greg directly to one of the starter mounting bolts.---Keoke

Greg and Keoke, Thanks. OK... We have a ground strap from the master switch to the chassis in the trunk and one from the frame to the starter bolt on the bellhousing (Greg, you are right, there is a threaded hole on the frame just under the starter). There also appears to be one required from the Overdrive to the chassis (???). Not wanting to fry the brand new rather expensive harness, can you think of any more?? Thanks, Ron

ALZO.... Any recommendation on the battery size and the gauge for the LONG cable from the NEGATIVE terminal on the battery to the solenoid?? The Brits drive on the wrong side and use positive ground on their classics.. go figure... Love'm anyway..The cars that is.... Ron

Battery Type: Sealed!
Battery Size: 65 AH with CCA @650 A Min.

NO additional ground straps are used.

Wire Guage "I Think" is #2AWG

Soo, YODA, In LA ehh, Thanks. Later this week, after two years of frame off, I will be starting the 'Brand New' AH 100-6, for the first time since 1978 ... Thanks for your help... you too, Greg!! Ron

Good luck Ron! I started my car about two weeks ago, great feeling. Mine was only out of commission since ’81 though.

Greg, I think that I read that the 'Flames' on your AH were the 'virtual' work by your son... Other than that, are you 'On the Road'?? Ron

Unfortunately, I will have to farm out the bodywork. I just don’t have the proper tools to do the job right (OK, or the skill). So the car looks Frankensteinesk at the moment. I have had it around the block though and it is pretty quick. You are correct about the flames being virtual, but I am the son. Every time I talk to my dad, he ALWAYS asks when is he going to get the car back. This has been going on for almost six years. I had to get back at him somehow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I, too, farm out the bodywork. Give me an engine, a hydraulic, or an electrial restore, I am your man... Bodywork, never took the time nor have the interest to sand and weld....Ron /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif

Cutlass,
Based on my recent thread re:Hot throttle linkage, make sure that where ever the strap connects, make sure that the connection is a good one!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Sorry to revive an older post, but does the BJ8 engine ground strap go in the same place as the 100-6? Thanks.

Hi Cutlass, Connecct the ground strap from the point provided on the frame directly to the lower Starter mounting bolt.---Keoke

Hi Ron, glad you're progressing. Since you mentioned grounding, now would be a good time to check some of the other, not so common grounds. First, ground the gas tank sending unit to the chassis. Also, ground each tail light. Verify the central ground under the hood latch mechanism is clean and tight. Also, if memory serves there is another ground wire attaching to the relay box left front. All of these seem minor now, but may become major, later on.

Johnny,
Thanks for the comments...

Now that the major grounding issue is resolved I will be tackling the remaining wire harness issues. 'tis a new harness and the dash wiring is yet to be connected. All of the engine compartment wiring is finished.. well, mostly... I will keep your suggestions in mind as I complete the wiring.

Yours is a fine example by the way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Ron, Original battery cables (at least for the 3000's) were 37 strand. British Wiring carries these and also a 61 strand (heavy duty). Of course with a 61 strand you will need bigger terminals to accomodate the wire size. https://www.britishwiring.com/

Cheers,
John
