What would cause a AH 100-6 (positive ground) generator to heat up/ smoke in a car with the ignition off? Regulator? Polorized incorrectly?

Yep Thats one reason there may be others,.---Keoke

It might depend on the circustances leading up to this event, ie reg points fusing up, wire short etc, tell more

What other reasons could be the cause? Thank you.

As ZBLU pointed out a malfunction in the regulator or the associated wiring.--Keoke

They recently had the generator rebuilt. Nothing else was done, but they did have charging issues prior to rebuilding the generator.

I'd guess that the charging problems were more the fault of
the regulator than the generator.

Perhaps the rebuilt generator "overdosed" the already marginal regulator and caused one of the sets of points in the regulator to burn and stick feeding an un-interrupted 12VDC to "smoke" the the generator coils. Could be armature coils, but probably field coils.

Any other ideas ?

Well this sets the red flag waving for me. The rebuilt generator definitely would require polarising a step that might have been overlooked or improperly done. This coupled with a regulator that was potentially acting up is sufficient to cause smoke.----------------Keoke
