aftermarket muffler options

okay, my 75 exhaust is in decent shape, except for the tail pipe out of the muffler. Generally speaking though, I think the side mounted muffler looks really ugly, and I'd like to replace it. Basically, I'm happy with the down pipe, and the pipe from the downpipe to the first of the two muffler units. there's an exhaust clamp just before the rear axle, where the first box attaches to, and I'd like to remove the muffler there and put something else there that shoots straight back, eliminating the huge rusty mess that's behind my tank right now. i haven't found exactly what I'm looking for so far in the moss and vb catalogs, anyone know who makes what I want? I can probably get my local muffler shop to work something out for me, but if there's a shelf option I can install myself I would prefer it...
Thanks, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Nial put a chevy muffler on his racecar. Of course the pipe diameter is much different, but if you know the specs of the muffler you're looking for, you can fit something. Mine was done from header back in 2.25" pipe with a high flow muffler by the local meineke. Turned out to be pretty inexpensive. Since you're just looking for a muffler, muffler shops are a good place to look and it should be less expensive still. The bill for the whole exhaust, custom made was something like $325. Does seem like a lot, but compared to some other things i've installed, that's practically pocket change.

Rob,

Depends on what kind of 'note' you want. The easiest and cheapest alternative is a "cherry bomb" glasspack muffler available at most car parts shops. They come in different pipe sizes and muffler sizes. They smaller ones will give plenty of note /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif and the larger ones a little less 'note'. The glasspacks start at 3" in diameter and 12" in length and go up both in diameter and length.

NAPA 17702

Cheap and it works. 2” in and out.

A few years ago, one of the car mags did a test with an 1800 cc car. Napa's 17702 did as good as any of the mufflers tested and was the cheapest one. (I believe it was Auto-X mag, now known as Grassroots)

I have run this on my 1293 cc Bugeye and it has a very nice tone.

Thanks guys.
My local muffler guy did full dual exhausts (2.5") from the header back on my jeep for $220, so I'm sure on this car it would be really cheap from the downpipe back, but if I can do it even cheaper I'm all for it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif If I go with him, i'll probably do a 12" glass pack since he has them and I know they'll fit, but I'd prefer something a little less..um...'ricy' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif I run glass packs on the jeep, but on a 4 popper they just seem sorta funny sounding to me. I'll look into NAPA's unit, they're used to me wanting random parts over there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Thanks,
Rob

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I've ordered a 17700 from NAPA. It's the same model as the 17702, but with 1.5" pipes instead of 2" pipes, so it'll bolt up. I also got a 1.5" aluminized 45 degree tailpipe to finish of the install and a couple of exhaust clamps. It'll all be here on tuesday so I'll play with it then. I've got too many projects and promised myself I wouldn't start modifying this vehicle...looks like that philosophy lasted about a week /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Rob, I'd like to know what you think of the NAPA muffler. Louder or quieter than before?

Thanks.

It hasn't arrived yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif None of the NAPAs in the state had them, or any close. Usually parts come out of Phoenix or Denver if they aren't available locally, in this case it's Miami! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Anyway, need to check with them this afternoon, may be here by now. I'll be sure to post back with my findings once I get the swap done /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Now the muffler 17700 from Napa. Did it fit right next to the Gas Tank?
I have a 1275 exhaust from moss motors on my bugeye and the pipe ends up just past my differential. So I am looking for a muffler
that would fit in between the leaf springs and the tank.

I don't have a muffler on my car right now, I was thinking about putting on headers and getting the free flow exhaust syserm from Moss (452-040) the dual exhaust should leave people wondering what is under the hood, had anyone installed this system, do you have to drill holes in your trunk floor to mount it?

I installed headers and a straight pipe onto my race car, it was too loud for the races(Db regulations for the track), i installed a 17" glasspack, it sounds beautiful, since its very different from the stock one, my dad and i rigged up a hanger by welding a u bolt and a hanger together with a rubber strap for a little movement and mounting it to a hole drilled in the trunk with a bolt. It fits between the springs and the fuel tank, we ordered it specifically so the glasspack would fit.

John, are you running "F" Production with the Midget?
I've got a '62 Sprite set up for "H" right now, but I can go to either "G" or "F" with an engine and brake change.
Jeff

My dad's old race car was FP class, the one i have now is street or street prepared. Once we modify it more, it'll change classes, but I want to make it street legal so I can drive it around.

sorry, haven't checked the site in a while. I thought I had posted a conclusion to this but guess not.

Here's an old pic:

It looks worse in the pic than it does in person, but it does hang down low. I reused hardware from the original installation, no additional holes or mounting hardware required.
