aero screen

The first test as to pricing for the replica aero screens is on an eBay auction. Check item 330320773333. Very tempting.

Supposedly a couple of these British built screens will be at TRA's National in West Virginia.

Hey, Lou, were the originals really aluminum as the eBay auction seems to suggest? I thought they were chromed brass ...

yes and perhaps some real ones too! :jester:

seriously Lou, Tom Maddock really did a wonderful job. They are very difficult to distinguish.

yes - perfectly!

Here is a photo taken at this year's show at Stoneleigh

Really don't have an answer if the originals were plated brass or aluminium as are these replicas. In Piggott's "Triumph By Name Triumph By Nature", I remember reading a couple of paragraphs about aero screens but I could not find them quickly but will (when I find the paragraphs, I will not remember why I was looking for them! - The curse of old age).

The screen is not to be confused with the "Brooklands Racing Screens" sold by Moss and others. These will use the bolts and mounting holes in the scuttle of all side screen cars up to about TS33000.

This project has been kicked around for many years and this fellow in Telford, Shropshire, England has finally got it right. He has in all probability patented the product and process so the $350 each price is the dreaded take it or leave it.

?
Are (were) these areo screens exclusive to Triumphs? Were there different models for different applications? If so, ignore the remainder of this post.

I have an original (or so I assume as it is so marked) Brooklands Areo Screen that came off of my '46 MG TC. I bought the TC from service man who bought and drove it in England in the 60's and then brought it home with him.

Mine is different in that the frame is a one piece aluminum casting. The mounts are not as 'beefy' and of a slightly different shape. The glass is about 2/3 as tall and does not widen after it clears the frame. The wing nuts are chromed steel. There is no rubber flap nor any provision for one.

So, will the real Brooklands windscreen please stand up.

Jim

The 'Brooklands' aeroscreens sold by Moss et al are a generic aftermarket item. I have one on my TR3A which is perfect for Arizona driving, not so perfect in areas with more chance of rain.

What you describe may have been an original item for MGs or perhaps an aftermarket accessory (more likely as it is labelled Brroklands), but certainly not the same thing that was on the early TRs.

BTW -- I do not think the Moss ones are actually labelled 'Brooklands' they just say 'Aeroscreen', or at least that is how mine is.

You can buy the feet & glass from Tom to convert your non-TR Brooklands aeroscreens (feet 32 pounds a pair & glass 16). Which I will do once I have saved enough.

Their website clearly calls them "reproductions". IIRC, one major difference is that they will not fit the pre-drilled holes found in TR3 and early TR3A. Supposedly the ones on eBay will.

Latter Moss units are labeled "Brooklands" in relief.
The repro of the originals will fit the caged nut holes in the earlier cars.

Nothing against those who wish to go with an authentic looking set of aeroscreens for their TR3, but personally, I think the commonly available Brookland screens look better...they are more graceful.

Okay, I see that the Moss ones are now labelled 'Brooklands' -- mine says 'Aero Screen' but they were purchased from Moss many years ago.

Shoot, now I can't get a matching one for my wife -- that was going to be her anniversary gift.

Just came in from the garage where she served tea and buttered scones as we celebrated the TR's 50th birthday -- 4/15/59 at 3:00 pm.

I would prefer the original style though I agree the aftermarket version looks good too. The ourboard support has a bit of a 'shoe' under it to make the screen sit close to level.

If you drive with this set-up (I often do) it's a good idea to get a couple of pairs of safety glasses in clear (night driving) and sunglass style as there is precious little protection from stones, etc.

I agree - far better than the supposed original profile!

I wear a set of Halcyon goggles. They are still being made by the people that made them for the RAF in WWII. Same specs...leather and all!

What I was hoping that everyone would lay off this auction because what we have done is established a $450 delivered to USA price. A $900 per pair price kind of takes my breath away.

martx-5> Those look exactly like what was on my '46 MGTC,(see previous post above, this thread).

I think I'll like the depth of the originals as the Brooklands don't give much protection from bugs, rocks etc. Using the proper caged nuts looks good too.
I agree that the Brooklands look 'cleaner' but I'll go with utility here.
