Advice- Wire Wheels and Spares

I have wire wheels on this car with no spare tire. (previous owner took the spare?) I currently carry a small compressor with me in the boot, but I got thinking- Will a compressor even work to pump up a flat tire with an inner tube?(I assume I have inner tubes.-don't all wire wheels have 'em?) If a tube breaks, will the wheel/spokes keep enough air to allow me to get home? Is it worth carrying the compressor, or am I destined to buy another wire wheel?

A puncture in a tubed wheel is not the same as in a modern tire. The tube does not self seal as well as modern tires. The wire wheel and tire do nothig to keep the air in. Each spoke is an air outlet, even the hole for the inflator valve is an air outlet. If you want the secutiry of a having a spare, you need to invest in another wheel.

I'll bet that there are a few people on this board that have one sitting around that they could give you for the shipping.

my car used to have wires on it, and if you have flat you can pump back up i will be suprised. When they go, they really go. I blew out (as in shredded 3 tires with my wire wheels before i took them off. I would get a spare wheel, or covert to 4 lug. My splines were wearing out, and the spokes kept tearing up my wheel liner, and ripping my innertube. I got sick of them and converted.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was excited to finally get a midget that had the wires, but I can see that though they are a sought after option, they might be more trouble than they are worth.
