TR6 Advice on TR6 gearbox and rear axle fluids..,

Flummoxed

Guys, I finally received my recommended GL4 fluid for my 73 TR6. Prob. is, my gearbox does have a leak, and I had been topping it up with GL5. My Bentley manual says not to drain the gearbox, only to top it up. (Why is that?) Anyone see a prob. w/draining it, so that I'm able to fill it up with the recommended GL4? Or should I just top it up w/the GL4. in which case there would be a mixture of GL4 and 5. Also, which GL to use on the rear axle, 4 or 5? As always, your help is appreciated.

From what I know GL5 fluids can deteriorate bronze or brass because of a sulfur additive, so GL4 is the proper lube. In your case I would definitly drain all the fluid out & refill.
Double check, but the same GL4 is used in the final drive as well.

Hi,

I agree, get that GL5 out of there as completely as possible. Possibly one reason the manual says not to drain is, if I recall correctly, many TR6 don't have a drain hole installed for the g'box and diff, from the factory.

If you don't have a drain hole, you might have to pump out the GL5.

Yes, GL4 should be fine in the diff. The only exception would be if there were a limited slip diff fitted (not fitted on most TRs, it's an expensive aftermarket item), in which case special lubricants might be needed to handle the higher temps and greater pressures.

Thanks for the help. I am confused why they say not to drain the gearbox, when there is a drain plug. But, I think I will take that chance, as there is at least some GL5 in there. As for the rear axle, I haven't touched it, so I'll just top it up with GL4. Although, come to think of it, no telling what fluid the p.o. put in the rear axle. Unfortunately, no drain plug for that. I may be safe and pump the axle fluid out and refill with GL4. Thanks again.

Guys, just for info. purposes, you certainly no better than I on these matters. But, a TRF guy did tell me to use a GL5 or 6 on the differential (rear axle), not a GL4. He did confirm the GL4 on the gearbox. I was ordering more GL4 and he happened to mention this.

The differential does not have a drain plug , only a fill plug. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING. It is common for drain plugs to be drilled in to the case during a rebuild.
You can use a suction pump to get out the old fluid.

As you said, the gear box has both a drain & fill plug. It may be helpfull to replace the plugs with hex key fitted plugs.

trboost or anyone-
I edited my post after you posted. But, a guy at TRF told me to use a GL5 or 6 on the differential, and not a GL4 (gearbox only). Maybe this is one of those preference things. I didn't really have time to inquire as to why the GL4 wouldn't be used on the diff. Any thoughts?

I think why GL5 is okay in the diff is there are no bronze parts in there (correct me if I am in error). The gearbox on the other hand has plenty of yellow metal with the early style bushes and of course the snychro rings.
