TR6 Adjusting TR6 Headlights

Hi folks,
Just finished restoring a 1976 TR6 and noted one headlamp wildly out of adjustment. I have a Lucas Fault Diagnosis book that talks about putting the car 25 feet from a screen (which will be my garage door), and ensuring the central point of the lights are at the same height, and equi-distant (left and right) from a center point on the car, presumably the grille badge. The guide, however, doesn't specify the height, or the distance left and right of the grille badge. Can anyone point to an authoritative source for these measurements? Or, any experts out there who know the numbers?

Many thanks to all.

Jeff

I don't know the exact numbers, Jeff, but should be easy enough to find. The badge belongs in the middle (the light pattern should be centered around the centerline of the car), and the height should be the same as the center of the headlight lenses. Usually, it's easy enough to just sight along the car, and see that the hot spots are in the right place. If you want to be really precise about it, the car should also be loaded as it will be while driving (eg 150 lbs in the driver's seat, etc.)

Note that you should have the high (aka main) beams on while doing this adjustment. The low (aka dip) beams will be automagically aligned from there, by the design of the bulb.

Doesn't Daniel Stern have a good guide too?

Thanks Gents. All great tips. I'd not have thought about making the adjustment with the highbeams active. I'll also check the link. Many thanks,
Jeff

thats a great article, I wish I had it when I adjusted mine. I left the trim rings off and just drove around the neighborhood, stop get out adjust, drive, adjust, until I felt they were where they needed to be without blinding oncomming traffic

A very helpful article that I'm taking home for use this weekend. Many thanks Elliot. This forum is a tremendous resource.

I used the info to set-up my headlights and have been satisfied with the results.
As Randall pointed out... it's best to have someone in the drivers seat when you adjust them.

I'll tell the wife (for the second time) that I need some ballast. The first was in connecting the lever arm shock connecting links to the rear trailing arms. Without ballast I ended up lifting the car off the jackstands, with the trailing arms just short of engaging the links. Once the wife sat it the car, it worked like a champ!

I'm sure she'll understand...

Jeff
